  • Weird 3rd gen?

I saw a kid's 3rd Gen Camaro today, red with a cowl hood and a primer black hatch, and the hatch was different from any other Camaro's I've seen. I think it would be considered a notchback, but it didn't have the sloping rear window all the other 3rd gen's I've seen have. Is this a rare option or something?

there are factory notch backs... and then after market notch backs...
factory are rare, i know they cam on the firebird for sure, not sure of the camaro but you can buy them and toss on an aftermarket too ive seen like 3 styles for the after market ones... flat glass right down.. slight slope but still pretty flat, then one i noticed about 2 weeks ago in town was pretty much the notch back design with the ring around the hatch but the glass was still on the same slope as stock just half the size... depending how they are setup they can look pretty nice

This one had a slight slope to it, not too much though. I saw a picture of one on google images, it was aftermarket though. I don't know why but I think it'd look better on a Firebird than a Camaro, maybe thats just me.

The notchback is a fiberglass piece that bolts on in place of the regular glass hatch (with the exception of a few differences). It has a small back window which comes directly down behind the rear seats (at a 75 degree angle). Then a flat area (like a trunk lid) extends to the rear of the car with a ridge running down the center. It has a spoiler, but not like the standard wrap around one. While aftermarket reproductions are found all around, an option code of AA8 was used for the factory notchback.

See that looks nice, I don't think it really flows with a Camaro though. Maybe if it was painted it would flow better.

The one he has doesn't slope that much, at least I don't think it does. Maybe I'll snap a picture of it tomorrow.

Yep, factory is very rare, and for Trans Ams only, no Camaros. I think (have to double check) that they were only available in '88 and/or '89.

            EDIT: Didn't type fast enough...

Yeah, the notchback was only available for the GTA, not even the regular trans am.

although i like the lines on that aftermarket one better...not so dramatic just falling right down still gives it a slight slope.. i wounder if it weighs any less, probably the same if not more than stock

Whether its an original notch or aftermarket notch youll still save a bunch of weight over that damn 12493098534095840385 lb hatch glass.

I bet it adds one hell of a blindspot too.. in addition to the one that's already there.
