  • V6 to V8 swap with entire parts car

i have a 1991 V6 firebird right now. but i might be able to get my hands on a 1987 GTA with a L98 and 700r4 with borg warner 3.27 with disk brake for 1k or less. ( the bad is its rust and a hardtop) is this worth it to buy and swap. the gta runs and drives.

how much would it cost to do the swap ( extra parts)
is it worth to swap the L98 TPI system in the car or go carbed
is it worth to swap the rearend in the car with disk rears
is it worth to swap any interior, guages, lights, etc.

on a scale of 1-10 with moderate mechanics skills how hard is the swap? mainly worried about electronics. (my key chip is already bypassed)

    thanks alot.

I would say you are looking at an 8.
You would need a lot off that car like springs, k-member and so on.
If you swap the computer and harness the car should work fine engine wise.

Stay fuel injected for a street car unless you really want a carb.

youre going to drop (and swap) k-members either way unless you want to do it the much harder way out the top. its by far easiest to do it all as one peice.

I wouold do it the way Joel sugjested, out the bottom if you have the ability to do so.

I believe you need the k-member from the GTA?

You would have to bring everything that works the V8 over to the V6 car to get it to work, computer and all.

That year is easy out the top.
It's just more time consumming going out the top.

Make sure you have the right equipment, you don't want to skimp in that area.

i figured having the entire car would be easy to take everypart i need. how hard would it we to swap in the rearend with disk brakes compared to my drums.

buy a cherry picker and some more jackstands or dont even bother doing it. Swapping the k-member and the engine seperately is a nightmare like you dont even realize. It can come out the bottom in an averaged size garage. The k-member has to come out the bottom either way.

the k-member has to be switched. i thought he motor mounts just need to be changed. this sounds like its gonna be alot harder then i though.

im thinking i guess ill just keep my car a V6 and sell it in the spring and buy a V8 car. its just i love the look of my car. lol and t-tops are awesome

Hold up guys - if he's dedicating a solid week of work to it, he could easily do it in one week.

Don't get overwhelmed with it. I only have a 2 car garage and getting the v6 out of my car was VERY easy. It only took two days worth of work and they were no where near "full" days of work. The first day I worked for like 4 hours just playing around with getting the car jacked up correctly with an inadequate jack, and then the 2nd day we worked from 2pm to about 8-9pm.

If I hadn't decided to do all the extra stuff to my LT1, it would have been very easy to turn around and put the LT1 back in. Biggest part of it is to have a good amount of $$$ for misc dime and nickel stuff that you'll run into - "Oh crap, I need this hose..." etc.

Don't listen to these guys...they are all 4thgen guys.....what they fail to know is the K-members on third gens are all the same. Plus we don't have that big ass windshield cowl hanging over the engine. It's stupid to drop the K-member to swap a motor. I've had a motor in and out of my car more times than I care to count and it's really fricken easy. Just take the hood off and your all set with plenty of access.
