  • 91 Bird, what's first "after the rebuilt 305"?

I just got a 91 TA and I am just rebuilding the 305, putting in a small cam and doing some head work. What are the best suggestions for 3rd Gen headers and other mods that "a mustang guy" should be aware of. Also, besides summit and jegs what are good companies I can order parts from. I don't know anything about TPI and little GM so help guide me through.

I know I should drop in a 350 but I'd rather rebuild the 305 instead of buying a 350 and then rebuilding that. I already have a fast car, this one isn't for Hp or racing, just good sounding and reliable. If you have a better suggestion for me I'm all ears.

...no I wont drop in a BBC and make it a drag car.

Honestly...I think you're wasting money on a cam and head work...that indicates you want it to be "fast"...which it won't be without a ton more work and $$$$...

If you want good sounding and reliable, go tune, headers and exhaust and call it a day.

Summit and Jegs are both exceptionable.

But Creight at CS3 Automotive can often beat their deals...give him a shot and see what he says...

I'm doing all the head work so there's no real extra $$. I've ported dozens of heads before so I know what to expect and the cost of a cam is nominal over a stock cam.

What's involved in a tune for a TPI car? "What, no more screwdriver and bent 7/16th?"

Pace Fabricting might be able to help as well as CS3 and they are sponsors
Summit & Jegs are good too!!!
TPIS is good too but you will drop some coin there.

Tune, talk to BLKHAWK, he is a sponsor too and he is on the Eastside and is really helpfull

          Never mind, I stand corrected...lol...

And you're talking to a guy that doesn't understand much past a screwdriver and bent 7/16th, so now you probably know as much as I do...

On a semi-serious side, the tune is likely not much different that what you're used to on your side of the fence...I can't imagine a cam, port and tune job would be much different than an injected 302...

Backwoods did my tune on there Dyno in Midland.

And is it a roller motor? or just a solid. If its a TPI, more then likley its a Roller motor. Cams are not cheap. I think I paid $320.00for just my cam.
Look at what I did to my car. My car sounds great for a 305.

I did an Edelbrock hi flow intake, edelbrock hi flow runners, 24# LT1 injectors, Holley AFPR, new springs for the cam, Double timing chain and gear set, & my cam.

If you can port the 305 heads then that will help out alot and pick up a few HP. I wish I knew someone who could have done it quick for me when I had the intake off.

I'm not doing anything now. I'll build my 350 and swap everything that I put into my 305 over to the 350.

Any questions Mike let me know.

LOL...you want a fun time stick a 4.10 gear in it! 3.73 was plenty for me.

Looks like you caught me, I was wondering how long it was going to take you to see my thread. lol

I think this is going to be the car I keep after I sell the mustang till I can find another project. IDK yet...

If it's a solid 3rd gen you better hang on to it!
I really CAN'T wait till my cars back on the road this year!

I pulled the interior and carpet a few days ago and all the floor pans are perfect and there's no rust on the car at all. Second owner, I did some work for him setting up his Home theater system and he gave me the car as payment. (Never turn down Free)

It's down at the wifes' dads house. Now I've got two cars in pieces, lol. The mustangs still the priority but after the mustangs done, who knows what's gonna happen with this car, maybe it'll grow on me.

I'm starting to think about a 4th gen TransAm but when Jess and I go back to Cali I don't want to deal with smog crap again.

                  I'm rambling...

I've read a few articles about folks building up 305s and making respectable power. I will have to go through some of my car magazines and post some of them up for you. BTW Kudos to you for trying something different!

On the G-body side of things the 305 just is not worth it. Yes you can make decent power but the money that you are going to put into that you can have a very mild 350 instead. I could have freshened up my original 305 but instead the small price of 1200 bucks for a new crate 350 caught my eye instead. If you look around you can get some good deals on 350's. Sorry i know you did not want to hear that but just putting in my .02

what transmission do you have in that car? That could also make a big difference in your choice
