  • LSx IROC: Project Thread

Well I started to rip apart the Camaro the other day and I thought I'd share my build with everyone. So here is the background on the build.

The car is a 1988 Camaro IROC-Z, T-Top car with a 6" cowl hood. I recently built a new motor for it and since the price of gas has enabled me from driving my car, I figured that I might as well start my restoration.

    What is planed:

So far I am planning on swapping a 5.3L truck motor in it and a 4L60E trans with a shift kit. I don't plan on doing that much work to the motor other than long tube headers, cold air intake, a Z06 cam, and a professional tune to eliminate egr, rear o2s, and a few other things. Also planned is a complete 4th gen interior swap. I just got a 1999 Camaro dash thanks to Adam (badinfluence) and console to go in and then I'll put some 4th gen seats in it as well as some 4th gen door panels. Other than that I just need to replace my headliner and do a few other odds and ends. But then I'm going to start some major work on the suspension. I just recently picked up a set of SS 10 spoke wheels thanks to Andrew (italicizedsponge) and they are soon to be sent out to get jet hot coated. I am yet to decide on what I want to do for the suspension, I'm either going to go with Hotchkis or maybe Spohn. After all the engine swap, interior swap, and upgraded suspension is done then the painting process will begin! I plan on keeping it the same color (Hugger Orange) and just adding a few different touches here and there. My goal is to be able to debut it at the Meet & Greet next year!

Well enough taking and here are a few pictures of the current process. I’ll keep updating everyone on the current progress and yes there will be LOTS OF PICTURES to go with the build!

Nice project. I just don't understand on stuff like this how they get the gauges in the dash to work.

      very sweet!
What are the plans for the motor you have in there now?

Have you weighed the difference in gas prices compared to buying a newer motor and doing all the work?

Or is it just something you wanted to do?

Car looks very sweet like it is!

I was thinking the same way when I first saw it but then I started reading and it seems pretty easy to do if you can wire things up. All you really need to is wire it up to the stock 3rd gen harness with the 4th gen connectors and then it goes into the new computer to run all the gauges. Over on TGO they have all sorts of wiring diagrams that can help a ton!

            Thanks!

Well right now its for sale. But if I dont sell it then I'm going to keep it and maybe in a few years my dad is wanting to build a T-bucket. I was thinking that a nice 500hp 383 would go really nice in a 1500 - 2000 lbs T-Bucket!

Ive always wanted to do it and the difference in my gas millage will be huge! I've seen these 5.3 swap camaros get around 18 to 20 in town and around 25 on the highway. As my car sits right now I'm getting 8 mpg.

you'll get over 20mpg with that lil 5.3 easily i got 20-21 city last year in my ls1

those motors are cheap to find so the cost shouldnt be that much but i guess it depends on where your getting it and "shopping around"
