Today I worked a bit on the fenderwells. One thing I've always liked is when I see a thirdgen with a shaved and smooth engine bay. Im planning to get rid of the bottle and cruise mounts on the fenderwells, weld the heater box holes closed, weld all the little bolt holes closed on the frame rails and replace the battery boxes with flat sheetmetal.
That said, today I took on the task of removing those pesky bottle stand offs that look like crap.
The first couple I used a cutoff wheel to slice them into flaps, and then pounded them down and welded up the seams, which worked out alright.
Here's the standoffs that im talking about:
and cut up:
The passenger side two turned out well:
The big one at the top of the drivers side (previously pictured one) also turned out well using this method. But, I wanted to try my hand at metal shrinking so for the next two on the drivers side I used the oxy-acetalyne torch, dolly, hammer and wet rag to shrink the entire standoff down. It turned out pretty well!
You can see the one on the bottom is almost entirely gone, all thats left is some little wrinkles that I have to shrink out tomorrow:
You can also see there the last one left on the inside of the fenderwell. That one was quite a bit taller then the others but I decided to try to shrink it out as well. I'm still largely in the process of that one when I called it a day so it kind of looks like hamburger, but itll shrink out tomorrow:
Yeah yeah!
