    this sounds strange

    as alot of you know i was getting advise from you guys on why my car was overheating way to fast. well my neighbor ( car nut ) came down and we decided it was threw we figured by the noise it was making it blew up like a ring or a rod but today we took are van to the locall garage and the mechanic said that the rattle was the hydrolic lifters needed time to realine themselfs because the engine has sat and been tipped alot and the reason for the overheating problem and the smoking was a leaking base gasket for the carb and the carb has a jet stuck wide open so i have to rebuild the carb.
    well i thought i would let you all know and let you voice your opinions on if this was possible or how big of a pain in the butt i have been with all my questions. but thank you for all your previous advice i learned alot of stuff i did not know.

    ive never heard on lifter needing to aline. they could get out of adjustment or freeze up but ive never heard of them un alineing

        Dustin, the rattle may have been a lifter (that has happened to me), the smoke may have been the carb gasket (that has happened to me), but the overheating issue is still a wide open question...I don't think we can attribute that to the carb.

        And you have definately NOT been a pain in the butt.

            well thank you the mechanic that told me this stuff said that if i want i can just take my carb to him with a kit and he will help make sure everything goes smoothly. another question that chevy 283 that i am selling can i take the edelbrock performer intake off that and put it on my stock 305 would that work because the guy i bought the 305 from had the engine under a tree that droped acorns on it and one of my heater hoses got pluged from them coming out of the engine while it was running.

                        Does it happen at just and Idle or while driving?

                        Does it have a Mechanical fan or Electric?

                        If it is Mechanical are both the radiator shroud and the fan clutch in place?

                        Is the small spoiler under the Radiator there?

                          i havent got to drive it yet i am trying to finish the car it's been my project so it only over heats while ideling it has a mechanical fan shrouds are all hooked up radiator to radiator was full of coolant and i have never heard of a spoiler under the radiator.

                            Should be a small spoiler attached to the bottom of the Radiator support. The one on my car hangs down about 4 inches or so. This spoiler forces air up to the radiator. What kind of fan are you running? Stock OEM clutch fan or aftermarket flex fan and spacer?

                            Hopefully you are running a Stock OEM clutch fan. I have had problems with the aftermarket flex fans not moving enough air and overheating.

                              i am not sure what fan it is i got it out of a salvage yard it was on a firebird but i can get a pic of it in a little bit. and yes that spoiler is on there
