hey guys with my new cam being alot bigger than my old one im concerned about a nice healthy idle... now my top end came with some roller lifter just the cheep spring loaded ones which will be nice for an extra 5-10 hp but really isnt going to help my idel issue... now im looking through jegs and find these rhoads lifters which "bleed down" at lower rpm's making better low end tq and a easier idel sounds about perfect for me and only like 90 bucks for a set... but has anyone ever used them or something like them... do they make any kinda improvement on idle?

I've never used them, but I have some friends that have used them in auto shop at my old school. I'll see if I can get a hold of them and get their opinions for you.

If your lifters bleeded down would there be a bunch of play in the rest of the valvetrain? Just how much do they bleed down..?

no its only at low rpm like 2,000 and lower and its only like .025 and effectivly making the cam 10 degrees smaller at idle... and the bleed off is gone the second you hit the gas... its seems to be made for a big cam engine for on the street...

thats pretty much what a hydraulic roller lifter does. It uses the oil pressure to do that. You get what you pay for though I wouldn't cheap out especially with a higher lift cam. Just my 2 cents.

Usually you can get a cam kit that has all of that stuff in it. Is that what you have?

yeah i had a full cam kit... springs roller lifters and roller cam... the only thing is i want to have a nice idle too... but the roller lifters may be nice and even though they cost 250 bucks they are still the cheep spring loaded ones.. which i havent had the best of experiance in the spring wears out you get a lift delay and boom busted parts... i would much rather trust a top end 100 dollar set of hydralic lifter than a 250 dollar set of cheep roller lifters... even though the rollers cost more they also dont last as long and arnt as forgiving... and with this hyd lifter it gives you that much more over a stock style set to give me a healthy idle just never used any like this before...

I hope you dont mean hyd lifter as in hydraulic flat tappet. I don't think your supposed to run flat tappets on a roller cam.

no no not flat tappet although you can use them on rollers... they had roller cams out before they had roller lifters out when i say hydralic i just mean they work on hydralic method ,they have hyd and mech for both flat tappet and roller lifters... i dont know i might jsut get a set of upgraded rollers like 290 bucks for a set of vertical locking ones...

When i say roller cam, I mean one made to be used with roller lifters. Why would they have designed them before they had roller lifters? All it is is a different metallurgic composition. Billet I believe, and they are able to have steeper ramp rates because of the roller.

I am using stock GM lifters with my .505/.510 lift cam. Which I realize is nowhere near your lift probably. You should be fine with a decent set of lifters... the ones included should work. Itll just idle high, but thats what you get for having that monster cam lol

Pretty cool id like to hear it, get some video.

well the roller cam... fast open close cam... has been around for awhile... short duration with a high lift makes for good hp... rapid open and close... but the acctuall roller setup we know today roller lifters with the ball bottom and roller rockers with the ball tip havent been around as long as the "roller" cam itself... they are just ways to free up power... less friction more power...
i mean i would loose maybe 5-10hp off the top end but in the bottom end i would have a nicer idle and a little more tq of the line... i dont know i think i will get them atleast try them out see what kinda differance it makes...

yeah never mind i figured it out... there is flat tappet style and roller style for common use i have to use eaither a roller lifter or a mock roller lifter which is basically just a rounded off flat tappet so it doesnt wear out the lobe... i couldnt tell what this lifter was because they didnt have a pic... but i got it now...
