  • B&M shifter

hey seeing who all has put one in before... i know shawn has one i got a b&m mega shifter designed specific for the third gen i got the top plate all cut out and ready to go... but i bought this shifter used... is there supose to be an adapter plate to bolt it in to the stock loacation? the bolt pattern is way off atleast in my 82 it is... i can just tap and bolt it down but i just wondered if thats the way you are supose to do it... or if they make an adapter plate before i start hacking into the floor more...

I think it should just bolt right up to the console? Is this the part you are talking about?

im talking about the shifter itself the baseplate... the bolt pattern to bolt the shifter to the floor is different from stock... which im thinking they are using a universal shifter and then the top plate is the third gen specific part... but im not sure... the guy used it for like a month or so before ripping it out and putting in a manual... it looks like he had all the parts he gave me the box extra cables pretty much everything but the instructions...isnt that ironic...i can still bolt it in but im going to have to drill holes to do that... im much rather keep it clean with an adapter plate or something if they have it... then to start cutting into the floor and not be able to put the stock shifter back if it calls for it in the future... usually when i have put a b&m in before it was just a universal... ive never done a model specific shifter before so im not sure at this point... it looks nice and all shifts smooth but that wont help if its not bolted in...lol

yep i think i will live... and if i ever get rid of the car ill just leave it in there... not exactly a hard to find part... i have to put in my vacume shift controller with it too thinking of taking the ash tray out just shoving it in there...that way i can just close the lid and you wont even know its there... best 35 bucks you can spend on any car... turn of a dial and you up your shift point...

lol i was just playing. It moves the rpm at which your trans shifts using a vacuum switch.

oh no it would im sure... atleast feel a little extra i put it on alot of my smaller cars my grand prix has one because that 3.1 isnt that quick... B&M makes 2 different styles... one is basically a vacume bypass... the transmission on most older and some newer gm trans are vacume controlled meaning when the engine reaches a specific vacume it is part of what tells the tranmission to shift.... some newer cars are full electronic no vacume at all... but i know with the grandprix and probably the same for the guys runnign the 4l60E it still uses vacume... because my grand prix runs the 6t60e just the fwd version of the same trans... anyways you just cut the vacume line... toss this in between it... and its just a dial... you close it to keep it stock... or open it up to allow more air in and there you go... the grand prix when i floored it normally would still shift just before the redline at like 5,900 rpm... now with this cranked all the way up it shifts at about 6,300 rpm you can feel the difference that last little go gives it... and if that one doesnt work for you they also make the electronic version which is a dial as well i think the levels are 1-6 and you just crank the dial and it tells the computer to change the shift point that much more... also works on pretty much every domestic and some import cars... i use it on the grand prix and duster right now...well i got to go to work but i will get you some pics and stuff i order mine right at autozone or murrays... through b&m catalog... but yeah should help alot if all you have is a 6 cylinder that can afford to rev a little more than stock...

the nice thing about buying mine used... he cut the factory wires and left it on the neutral switch... so i dont have to guess on that... just match the colors and go. and i think they normally run like 175 bucks or more new atleast... i found this one for 65 bucks pretty much complete even the extra cable and shift plate to change over to overdrive
