  • Numbers Matching???

can anyone tell me where you look to tell if a car is numbers matching? I know they are on the block, heads, trans, and rear somewhere but thats about it.

Depends on the car I guess... a lot of the stuff isnt VIN matched, just date codes, if even that. The old old stuff is, but like my car, doubt it.

Camaro or Bird? If I recall correctly early 2nd gens did have vin matching engines, but I could be wrong.

Here's a link for 2nd gen birds, not very helpful but better than nothing I suppose. http://www.78ta.com/match.htm

But it sounds like you already know what to look for. I can't think of any other place that you didn't list besides the cowl tag.

                  Hi Joel,

Your #1 sourse for information on second Gen Camaros is www.nastyz28.c0m

There is an extensive data base of numbers, options, codes etc. Besides a very knowlegable group of guys there.

Numbers matching has to do with the VIN number, build dates, and trim tag codes, which have to do with which model (Z28, RS, V8, Transmission, etc) as well as original paint codes and interior codes. You can even get into casting numbers for the block & heads. Same goes for the transmission and rear end. It's a very extensive thing if you take it seriously.

You can tell when the car was built, what plant it was built at, what color it was, if it had a vinyl top, if it's a Z28 or not, if it still has the original transmission and rear end, and more.

Certain models came with particular parts, like Z28's had a better suspension than a base 350 2bbl, automatic, for instance. You should be looking for consistance of the parts on the car, and see if any of the particular parts are missing.

Check out Nasty Z28, I think you'll find everything you need to know there.
RIP Doug,You will always be remembered

yea i looked at the optioning stuff on nastyz28 already. From what i can tell everything seems correct but were gonna make sure.

and ill spill the beans, my dad is looking at a 71 SS. The guy says "he thinks" its numbers matching (it does have correct drivetrain) but isnt sure. So yea, were gonna find out.

                    thanks for that link jeremy.

I agree with Doug NastyZ28 www.nastyz28.com is a good place to start. Team Camaro http://www.camaros.net/forums/ is also a very knowledgeable site on the 1st and 2nd gen cars.
