I could go into detail but it would be a long post.
Like said above regardless of which one you find a rebuild will cost about the same.
A 400 will make great power but uses more RPM so they like more gear.
A 455 makes more torque so it can use less gear to be just as fast.

I know about the 455. I'll be calling the guy at the junkyard soon. I believe the name of the yard is called Motor City, off 32 and Romeo Plank I believe. Or maybe it is further down. Either way I'll find out. Anyway, I have found some information on what I want to do. Keep in mind I only want 400-500 hp, and I know how to obtain that pretty easy. http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...ine/index.html
As you can see, the cam does the most improvement.

Oh, and for the record, I'd like to stick to Pontiac. I'm not much into throwing Chevy or Olds motors in Pontiacs unless it is really needed. Plus I want that insane amount of torque. I want to keep this car simple as far as the engine goes.

Haha, yeah sorry for sounding kinda egotistical there. My original plan was to maybe make 300 if I was lucky, but after seeing how much a cam swap does for that engine... it seems easy to make 500 hp.

Really watch what heads you end up with then. You find a '77 station wagon 455, it's gonna take more than a cam swap.

My plan is for a cam, carb, manifold, header, roller rockers, and carb spacer build up, as well as some new heads if I need to.

thats the worst thing about the old poncho motors performance parts arnt cheep... and starting to get harder to find.. but for power wont take much to bump it up dont forget the poor old 400 and 455 were stuck in the smog era... just a few basics like head job intake cam ect. will really wake them up over the crap they were given for factory emissions...

Yeah, I know what you mean. In the article I read, the most came from the cam because that engine had a weak cam. Hopefully I'll get lucky and not have to go as far as the heads because I think that will be the most costly to replace.

Heads are where the HP is. The easiest way to get 500Hp out of a Pontiac is to go with aftermarket Aluminum Heads. But they arent cheap You could use some factory heads and Port them but you would need to find some early heads with smaller Combustion Chambers. This has an adverse affect on the ability to run Pump Gas. You can however get some late model heads do some port work and a good valve job and make around 400 reliable HP.
