    Gas Tank Replacement

    I recently had to re-install the gas tank on my '79. The problem is, the float bowls don't seem to be filling up. I have a high volume Holley mechanical and have recently updated the carb. Also, I have a fuel line with the pressure gauge attached to it. I had forgotten to place the plug on the bottom of the fuel line to the carb and had a minor leak coming from it. Maybe half a dixie cup worth of fuel (or less), installed the plug and after roughly 10 minutes of turning it over, the bowls still didn't fill (using a piece of paper towel to "feel" the inside of the float bowl on the carb).

    The major question is: coming off the tank are two lines. Both steel, Both of the same appearance. One upper (off the tank) and one lower (also off the tank). When I hooked up the fuel hoses from the tank lines to the ones on the car, I just put them side by side (upper to the more rearward line and lower to the more forward line). Could I have mistaken this?

    To be honest, I really didn't pay much attention removing the tank, due to the fact that I have a fuel cell, and was going to install that with new lines, but, due to "happenings", I had to go back to the stock tank for the time being. Anyway, does anyone have a picture, by any chance, of the fuel tank to the vehicle line connections (rubber hoses)? They are located after the passenger rear wheel just above the leaf spring. Could sure use some quick, easy help here.

    yeah steddy one is a supply line and one is a return,the return should be thinner in diamater like 5/16 and the supply is 3/8, i can try to get you a picture tonight when i go work on it.

      its the more forward line that u need to hook to ur pump.

        Ok, lines were all hooked up correctly. I checked and the pump isn't getting the fuel into the carb. I tried a couple pumps with no success. I blew the lines out, I even made sure that air would go to the tank from the front of the car. While the fuel pump was unhooked, I could feel vacuum at the inlet and pressure at the outlet. I took the pump off and squeezed the flapper and fuel shot. I'm beginning to wonder if the push rod is bent or something. Wouldn't be a big problem, except that when the gas tank was removed, it ran just fine. Now, I can smell the fumes at the carb, but see no pressure at the fuel pressure gauge. I've started looking for hidden cameras, cause none of this makes sense to me.

            Positive there isn't an air leak between the pump and the tank? Good amount of fuel in the tank? Starting off with the simple stuff

            Might be worth a shot - had this happen once with my Chevelle. I couldn't get fuel up to my carb so I put some gas in a 20oz bottle and poured a little down the carb. Fired it up and kept it running for a little bit with the gas in the bottle. The higher RPM's eventually pushed gas to the bowls If you don't get gas to the bowls after 15 seconds with the motor running, well, then you have some problems.

                For about 10 minutes, there was a crap load of air. I wanted to dislodge any potential clogs. I even lifted the car to the side for about an hour, trying to get the tank to force the gas into the line. I might have to try that bottle trick. I put a small amount down it early on and she was willing and ready, but not nearly enough to run it. Jon, if you have the time during the coming days, I could use a second brain on this, being that it's just too stupidly simple for words. The reason I'm thinking the rod though is bent is that the new pump I put on had almost the same amount of vacuum and pressure and the present one. I have a rather deep pickle jar that I'm going to put the fuel tube in and turn the motor over and see if it even gets the fuel there.

                    Steddy did u get that fuel problem fixed yet bro,wish u was a little closer,i would come help u out,are u running the return back to the tank.
