  • what is turbo 4.9L?

Saw a nice T/A for sale today.
1980 Turbo Trans Am, hood scoop/shaker thingy was labeled Turbo 4.9L.
What is that? a Chebby engine? another Buick? What?
Pontiac never actually made a Turbo Pontiac engine for the T/A, did they?

thats the 302... very good motor same thing as a 305 i believe just slightly smaller.. and from what ive been told by people who own them much more reliable im pretty sure it is a pontiac motor, but i think they tossed the 302 in a few chebbys as well not sure if its exactly the same i know they made alot of turbo TA's in the 2nd gens last years so it is original.

Yep, it's a Pontiac 301. I believe it is the last pure Pontiac designed block.

They started life in 1977 as a fuel efficiency motor, and Pontiac put them in everything from Firebirds to Bonnevilles to help with the new California CAFE requirements.

When they did away with the 400/403s in '79, somebody at GM got the bright idea of putting a turbocharger on top of a 301 for the T/As top line engine (they make 210 hp and 350 (?) torque) with 4.5 lbs of boost.

Not one of GMs best concieved ideas.

You need to be very anal retentive with oil changes, pay attention to that redline, and don't live there too often. This engine is NOT meant to be hotrodded regularly. Or else the bottom end will be pieces on the road due to substandard 2 bolt main bearings. Yes, they came with adjustable wastegates, however I wouldn't go must past 5 psi without splaying the 2 bolt bearings to 4. Some people claim to have done it, but I've never seen one, nor heard of one holding up for a significant period of time.

The turbo 4.9L got specific turbo rods, heads, smog equipment, and crankshafts (impossible to find) as opposed to the naturally aspirated 4.9L cars. Five years ago, these cars were worth more as parts than as cars, but that is changing.

If it's a complete and original car, and you can get it on the cheap, you should be able to flip it in a couple years for some good coin.

The 302 Chevy motor was only made in 67-69 if I remember correctly. Plenty of power, just some small reliability issues.

          On another note.. I'd like a turbo 301 T/A

You are correct. Drastically underrated at 290 hp. With the over the counter cross ram, power was closer to 400. Was used only in the Z28s to be homologated into SCCA.
