it does crank over...i had it running for about 10 seconds..but it stalled and havent been able to get it started since....it does back fire when trying to start...iv done some talking its gotta be the distributor or the fiber timing behind the timing plate but idk

Sounds like you're getting closer...idle thought...have you changed out the fuel filter?Originally posted by scubasteve18 View Postit does crank over...i had it running for about 10 seconds..but it stalled and havent been able to get it started since....it does back fire when trying to start...iv done some talking its gotta be the distributor or the fiber timing behind the timing plate but idk
Not saying that is a cause, but it may be a contributor...Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! SPEED! AN ENGINE THAT SHAKES MY INTERNAL ORGANS LIKE THEY GOT PARKINSON'S! there is no fuel filter....we have the gas hose hooked straight to a gas can with brand new gas....it also has a brand new fuel pump that we just put on.....i tried to advance and retard the timing by moving the dist. that's how it was able to run but now i cant even get it to start ....

Hmmm...at this point I might pull the distributor and take it to Autozone or similar, have them spin it and see if it's still good...Originally posted by scubasteve18 View Postthere is no fuel filter....we have the gas hose hooked straight to a gas can with brand new gas....it also has a brand new fuel pump that we just put on.....i tried to advance and retard the timing by moving the dist. that's how it was able to run but now i cant even get it to start ....Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! [quote=.....car sat for 25 years [/quote]
??? How long has it been since the car was last started? If it has been 25 years, it's quite possible the cylinders were rusty. And when you crank it over it will take out the rings. I would strongly consider a compression check. Try shooting some starting fluid down the carb. If it will start and temporarily run on starting fluid, it's a strong possibility you have a fuel problem. The fuel that was left in the carb and fuel system will turn into gum and varnish after sitting for a long period. Good luck.

yea its been 25 years...before we started it we poured marvel magic in the cylinder's to loosen any type of rust in the cylinders ...the carb was pulled of when put in storage along with the gas tank...it still has full compression

Full compression for each cylinder?Originally posted by scubasteve18 View Postyea its been 25 years...before we started it we poured marvel magic in the cylinder's to loosen any type of rust in the cylinders ...the carb was pulled of when put in storage along with the gas tank...it still has full compression

Not the Compression ratio, but what the cylinders actual compression psi is. This will tell you the condition of the cylinders, piston rings, head gaskets, and valves. As a rule, most engines should have 140 to 160 lbs. of cranking compression with no more than 10% difference between any of the cylinders. Low compression in all cylinders would tell you the rings and cylinders are worn and the engine needs to be overhauled. The video below should help.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Sitting for 25 years you might as well sell it as not running because whoever buys the car is going to be dumping $10,000+ into a restoration...Originally posted by 97rs4life View PostGood luck getting it fired up though, sitting that long it could be a handful of things causing it to not start.- Brian Meissen
