  • a little help on a 2nd gen Pontiac GT 37

    A buddy has a 1971 GT 37 and I need a little info help.

    Maybe Todd can chime in with some help.

    Here's the info off the name plate under the hood.

    ST23337 PONO59379BDY
    TR 238 5353PNT
    02B
    PONO59373BDY

    VIN# 233371P127363

    Guy said it has the 455 HO motor in it but we crawled under the car looking for any marking on the block. We didn't see any.

    On the passenger side YC and the heads had 143 on them.

    Any help would be great. And if its worth buying.

    Thanks

    The important stuff...

    VIN...(2)(33)(37)(1)(P)(127363)

    2 = Division (Pontiac)
    33 = T-37
    37 = Body style (2-door hardtop)
    1 = Year (1971)
    P = Assembly plant (Pontiac, MI)
    127363 = Sequential build number

    TR 238 indicates a Sandlewood interior.

    GM 5353 is paint Quezal Gold Metallic.

    02B indicates the car was built the 2nd week of February of 1971.

    The beautiful part about a T-37 was they once you checked that box, it opened up almost every option Pontiac had available in 1971...although many came with anything from a 350 2-barrel to a straight six.

    Unfortunately, there isn't a VIN or Data Plate number to confirm engine combinations.

    If it is a 455 HO, it is exceedingly rare...there were 5802 hardtops total produced, but a 455 HO car is likely to be measured in the 100s (or less).

    I'm still looking for build quantities, but my best advise would be to sent it through Pontiac Historical Services and let them confirm it.

    Best money you can ever spend on a Pontiac...

    EDIT: A YC block would indicate a 1971 455-325 hp engine with an auto trans...I would pursue this one agressively...it may be legit...if not, the block alone is worth significant money to a T/A restorer...

              Yeah both our 72 350 and 455 blocks have them on the drivers side front.

              Yeah the guy wanted $3000.00 for it.
              My bro in law offered $800.00.

              It all needed to be rebuilt and it did not run.
              manual tranny was taken out and a automatic was put in.

              It was a pretty solid car, but needed a lot of work.
              Bryan already has a 69 & a 72 firebird, and a 70 Chevelle SS.

              He really didnt want another project. But if the price was right, he was going to toss it iin the corner and forget about it for a few years.

              Thanks for all the info.
              If anyone is interested, let me know.
