  • Car Trouble..help!?!

Mods: Move this into 4th gen specific please (I couldnt put it there..kept logging me out for some reason)

    Ok on to the problem...

Car was runnning fine earlier...then all of a sudden on the way home It was riding pretty rough..in the 25-40mph range..it would be vibrating my steering wheel pretty bad when im pressing the gas and letting off, even when I push the brake...When I let off I will be going like 35mph..then 5 secs later it drops to 19ish instantly..doesnt even drop it slow like it should..IDK wtf is up

Also I noticed when I arrived here at my moms house when I got out the car..enormous amount of heat coming from the driver side wheel area...walked over to the passenger..nothing..is it normal to be having alot of heat come that direction? Literally felt like a heat was blowing right on me

Anyone have some answers for me ?

so it only does it at 35 to 40 mph? Any smells? Did the car pull at all? Did it feel like an engine shake? Give us more dude.. cuz some clowns gonna toss up some dumb answer.... we need more info.

um...there was a grinding noise sometimes when I turned the wheel..There was an odd smell..smelt like something was burning...The car drives fine for like 5 min then it becomes a pain. slows down doesin 25-25..under 25..any speed I go..and it shakes pretty bad..well not that bad but bad enough when im exceeding 40+

Also..I was at a stop light a couple times..and I wasnt even pressing the brake pedal and my car was @ a complete stop..didnt even budge when I should of been moving forward

was thinking a caliper could be stuck?

werd same thing i was thinking... check it out.... if its not stuck make sure to check yur lines out as well... kinked lines or even twisted lines from previous removal..

I'd pull the wheels off and check out the caliper and rotor. Thats probably your problem. If thats the problem you want to fix it early. You can burn out wheel bearings, and end up replacing more brake components if you don't look into the problem early. Let us know what happens

x2...this has happened to me twice.

If it's a frozen caliper, it will also smell like nothing else you've ever smelled before.

And whatever you do, do NOT hit it with cold water to cool it off.

                Don't ask me why I know this...lol...

Ok so if it is the caliper...how would I go about checking it and knowing that it is? Im no brake expert so I dont know much..just read it in the books and they didnt say much about how you know its that exactly..(which it is)..But ID really know how to fix it?

Jack up the suspected wheel, and give it a spin. If it's starting to lock up, it won't rotate freely and you'll hear/feel a vibration or rubbing noise.

Your rotor could be warped as well, so the sound could be intermittant...kinda like a record player's needle riding over a warped record.

And it could be heat related...so you might have to drive it a bit, build up some heat, and then do the same procedure.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a caliper...maybe proportioning valve? If it was a caliper, it would be pretty repeatable and consistant. A proportioning valve could show a come-and-go kind of issue.

Does the rotor have a blue-ish hue to it? That is a sure sign of a caliper that's stuck.

Since everyone else is going with the obvious... I'll guess wheel bearing!

HAHA nice Rob but Rolo you can get a C-Clamp and try to compress the caliper piston and if it does go back in then its shot. I know how it is to get a locked up caliper and it sucks!! I had one lock up to where the wheel wasnt even turning anymore and we bent a C clamp oops lol
