  • water temp gauge... yay/nay?

i have an opportunity to get a nice autometer temp gauge for my car, still in the box, priced cheap. Im already planning on doing A/F and oil temp as well. Question is, should i even bother with this or is the stocker good enough?

that one specifically... im for sure getting the phantom A/F guage.

I know my stocker is a bit off, and my brothers is off in his 99 as we compared it to the hptuners readings and noticed they were both a bit off.

I might have a a/f phantom gauge here in a little while depending on how long it takes the PLX group purchase to go through. I plan on putting the wideband gauge in place of my current a/f phantom gauge on my pillar. Need like 15 more people to sign up for it though

hmm ok. perhaps i can mount the sending unit closer to the block exit to give a more accurate reading of how hot its running?

Im already getting the A/F gauge from the same guy for sure, i just need to decide if i want the water or not... or just put the money towards the oil temp.

IMO buying any gauge you already have in your cluster is going to be redundant. Im guessing your planning on a 3 pod A-pillar setup. A/F or a pyrometer is a must , so you have that covered, oil temp is another excellent choice but dont forget your going to have to drill a hole in your oil pan for the sensor. The third spot I would fill with either a Fuel pressure,Nitrous pressure ( if you plan on running it) or if you have a automatic a trans temp gauge.

Autometer also makes shift lights that fit into the pillar pod as well, just an idea.

thing is my stock gauge actually does fluctuate quite a bit, unlike any other vehicle ive ever driven.

i have a dual pod. plan on doing A/F and oil temp in that. the water temp would be going in the cassette cubby in the console with my switches. im planning on drilling my oil plug out for the oil temp instead of messing with the pan and risking getting shavings in there.

If you know your car doesnt overheat.. then I guess I dont see the point. You really just need to see if its abnormally hot (like a bag over your radiator, ask me how I know), which the stock gauge works fine for.

My stock one is off a little too. I went with a oil pressure and oil temperature because these are the 2 most critical guages for a motor.

i'd get it. Mine also fluctuates but is way off. I hooked a scan tool up to the car while driving. Usually my water temp will go up to just past 210 and hold it. So when driving, it got up to just past 210 and the scan tool read a whopping 170*! Then the guage stood there and as the temp rose to 186* by the end. Its worth it IMO, stock one seems to be a joke.

Some of you guys just might have a bad sensor or something, Mine sits right about 190 once it warms up and stays there.

yeah it's usually the sending unit not the gauge. But if your computer is reading lower or higher than your gauge, it's probably the gauge that's off. My truck reads about 235-250 which is way too hot. Hooked up a tech2 to it and read about 190. So i'm gonna invest in a little guage console for the truck to get some more accurate readings.
