  • New Project! P&P Throttle Body

Well, I just purchased a spare throttle body with all the sensors for 30 bucks which is pretty cheap. So now it is time for me to take a step in the 3.8 community and start a new project that most people have put aside because we never had the tuning before and the cars would run like crap afterwards. The only way to make it sort of work before was to buy a 99+ MAF after you removed the lower section of the blade.

    The Project:

P&P 3.8l V6 Angled Throttle Body using the 95-98 MAF and tuning it with HP tuners. I will not just be taking the lower part of the blade off, but actually porting the whole thing out to make the overall diameter bigger from the current 65mm size. I will be doing this all to the spare with a dremel and other tools I have here at home. I will also when finished probably polish the outside or paint it, I haven't decided yet. I think a polished TB would probably look pretty nice.

Most people on the boards at camarov6.com have turned away from the throttle body and I think with proper tuning there can be some nice gains from it. There was a company once (RAT, went out of business though) that did this and seen 10rwhp and like 14tq gains but I think they tweeked the MAF instead of tuning the car. So I am shooting for that, but hopefully with it tuned correctly even more. Combine this with a P&P job to the intakes and heads, and your engine will be breathing like crazy.

So what do you guys think? Am I out of my mind? I dunno, but I am bored and would like to maybe help the 3.8l fbody crowd out and maybe start something new with the P&P throttle body cuz not to many have it done. Someone has to be the pioneer right, lol

I had a TB ported by ZZP and did some MAF cals myself on my 3.8L after that and some higher ratio rocker arms i put down 181 at the wheels. Then i got my hands a TB from the supercharged 3.8L (L67) did some minor work to the back so it would seal and MAF cals for that. Both worked out about the same in 1/4 mile times. Response was alot better!

what did you do for the MAF cals for both of them? I just plan on using HP tuners to do it.

Well this was back in the day when we didnt have Tuner programs yet. I bought a MAFT+ from Ramchargers. You can change base maf and timing along with WOT maf and timing. Its really just a "spoof box". Hard wires into timing signal to pcm and into MAF, then with dials on it you set +/- fuel and timing.

oh ok, yea I wondered if that was what you used.

So glad we have hp tuners now!

throttle body came today, now I just need to run to the hardware to get some extra supplies and I can hit the ground running on this project, lol.

I still haven't decided yet about the MAF. I thought about using the stock one from the 96 car but I still might upgrade to a 99+ MAF and tweak the maf settings some. i dunno, we'll see.

Sweet.. you going to use low profile screws for the blade and plug the coolant passage in the bottom.

yea for the screws, I am doing low profile and I am going to flatten the blade rod in the middle as well so it will flow better. As for the coolant passage, I am leaning towards plugging it, but haven't decided for sure yet. Some people say stuff about it freezing in the cooler months, but then again I don't drive it in the winter. Only times to worry about it would be late fall or early spring when I have it out with the chance of cold days.

I most likely will plug it though.

I have seen dyno runs with it plugged and unplugged and had both show better so I'd be interested in the results too

well the thing is ported and now I am in the process of sanding it all down really good. So far the 220 grit sanding is pretty close to done, and it is starting to look really good. I am pumped to get this thing back on, tune it, and see the difference it makes if any, lol. That shaft was a huge part to chop out. Had to help somehow

the GTP supercharger will not work on an fbody. Our engines sit to far in the back. In order to make it work there would be a lot of work to be done. Cutting the firewall, cowl, windshield area for starters. Only superchargers for the fbody that will work are the centrifical ones like powerdyne or the ATI kit.
