  • 1997 Camaro SS - 30th Ann Questions

Just purchased a 97 30th anniversary car. Very clean in , out, top & bottom. A couple of things I see makes me wonder. Could use some help/expertise:

    1. The rear end is unpainted. Light surface rust present. Has stickers and paint pen markings present. I wonder why it wasn't painted from GM or SLP?
    2. If I clean the rust up and paint the rear end will it de-value the car as original?
    3. The hood bumpers have white paint on the threads. Does anyone know if this is from the factory or an indication it was painted?

That's standard for the axle - I think they were shipped with at most a very mild coating that quickly disappears. Not sure on impacting the value though.

As for the hood bumpers. I think mine are all black - I would tend to think that indicative of a repaint. I can check tonight.

I'm going with a repaint - those go on after paint.

Have you repainted yours or leaving the cool rust color?

I really have no idea what it would do to the value, but I'd consider hitting that axle with some wd40 and see if the surface rust wipes off at all. If not, maybe some 0000 steel wool, then soak a rag in WD and wipe it down coating it lightly. Should preserve that original bare metal look (without scratches or brush marks) as much as possible while keeping away further rust if done periodically.

You could clean the axle of rust...

...then protect it, leaving a natural finish.
