  • racing in an automatic

I dont realy want to go racing all the time but I want to know how you race someone when you drive an automatic. Im talking about on the highway do you use overdrive, do you just floor it or what. I went out after the swap was done I didnt push the car real hard, raced my buddie maybe 1/8 mile on the highway I had it only in drive. It seems like these motors rev high quick. What do you do it your automatics.

I like to shift mine... But what really helps is a chip that when your going about 40 or so ,you stomp it and it kicks in and gos like a bat out of Hell... I put one in on my Camaro & it works great. If you never kick it ,it doesn't kick in ...

depends what kind of trans your workin with. The electronic 4L60es seem to be pretty happy in overdrive. I know the one in my Z71 never hesitates to downshift and put you in your seat a bit. However if your working with something like an old TH400 that might be a different story. The 727 in my cousins coronet (dodge th400 equivalent) is only happy getting manually shifted. Even with the TV cable hooked up properly it shifts before powerband of his 440bb really hits. Even without a ratchet shifter, it shifts instantaneously when you click it up a gear. The second the shifter clicks the tires are chirping. I wish they still made automatics that way.

if im doin a 40 roll with mine i use to put it to 3rd and it would get me about 3000 rpm and then after the 3rd honk floored it and shifed it into overdrive after flooring it

Leave the car in OD, the 4l60e should always downshift if there are more than 500rpms left in that gear or so. I've heard bad things about manually shifting your auto, the trans was made to do the work for you so let it. If your unhappy with these results order a Yank converter

Im sorry but no man can shift faster than a computer. Leave the car in OD, it will do all the work

manually "shifting" an auto doesn't make the shift slower fyi... it just means you get to pick the point when the auto shifts gears. However, you're not smarter than the computer, let it do the shifting for you, trust me

on the old transmissions from the 50's you could shift better, but modern transmissions are designed to shift at the right moment (aka to keep you in the power band)

                      Alright guys
If your racing in an Auto use 3rd gear don't use OD the Trans is not programmed to shift into OD at WOT.(you have to let off)

As for running on the street from say anything under 30-35 You can manually downshift the car to 1st gear faster than the computer will.
But you need to return it to 2nd or 3rd pretty quikly so the computer won't throw a fit.

And Yes it works I did it on my `94 Automatic

I don't have a 4th gen so none of my stuff is electronic. I have a megashifter and I manually shift the car.

Going WOT into OD will only happen at very high speeds, shouldn't be anything to worry about.
