  • Engine shops.

    Coolant in my oil pan..
Hey guys, so it looks like I'm in need of a head gasket replacement by the looks of my car. So, where can you guys recommend me to go? I would rather have the job done right, because if I do it, I probably won't do it right with my crappy luck.
So yeah, if you guys have any great places you recommend me to go to, let me know.. The sooner the better, thanks guys.

To be completely honest i wouldnt trust/want a shop to do that repair with the engine in the car. Theyd kill you on labor rates because its a pita job. Might want to look for a good used LT1 or drop the whole thing out yourself (save lots of labor $$) and put some of that savings into a full engine rebuild.

I'm with you on that, I'd rather drop the engine out and get it rebuilt.. But hell, I don't think I can drop the engine out myself.
Hell, I'd be willing to pay for someone to help me drop it out..

Pick up a cherry picker from harbor freight and go at it. Its really not that bad. Disconnect everything, unbolt the k-member and lift the body off of it and you can roll the engine around on the front wheels. Set the car down then pull the engine off the k with the cherry picker and toss it in the back of a pickup.

I think I'm going to try it.. I'll get a consensus from the family. Shit, yesterday I was so defeated, I didn't think I could possibly do it.. but hell now I feel like I should be able to do it. Thanks Joel!

You can expect about a full days work if youve never done it before. If you need to borrow a haynes manual or anything ive got them. Willing to lend a hand if i have time, but thats a big if until this semester is finished.

Yeah, I have the Chilton manual at home. I don't think i'd be able to knock this one out of the park in less than a day I ain't that confident!
I'd appreciate any help anybody can give, so I salute you! I probably wont be starting the removal until the end of the school semester. School > camaro (sometimes).

Well, I ended up taking the car to shop instead. It's going to Masterworks, where a fellow member here works. I know for a fact they do great work, as they worked on my grandfather's corvette a few years ago.
So, hopefully, this nightmare will be over.
                Thanks again ladies and gentleman

It's easy Dan, have faith. Just get a good torque wrench and plan about 4-12 hours. I've done 2 without any issues.

masterworks is probably the only shop around I would trust with my car.

Yeah I know, it's a damn good place.
The reason I'm having them do it is because I don't want to have to worry about it. that and I don't think I would have time.
Just thankful my family is helping me out. Of course, I'm paying them back!
