Yep. 100% exactly what happened to me. My torque arm was the cause.

Edit: although this is your front u-joint... torque arm shouldnt affect that.

The spider gears in my Jimmy blew apart at speed, pretty violent jolt and a ton of noise.

My Saturn SC2 literally blew the diff and the spider gears out of the car. The force behind that one lifted the front end of the car off the road, stalled the engine, and filled the cabin with smoke. My first thought was the airbags deployed for no reason.

Brian, Mr. Nice guy only gets you so far. Sometimes you need to play the bad guy. Sack up and raise hell in that shop if they're being incorrigible. Demand they fix it for free or foot the bill for a shop that knows what they're doing to do it. Shops are insured for things like that. Everybody eats a damage claim once in a while, that's why the protection is there.

Go up the chain until they get it right. Don't let those lazy pieces of crap take advantage of you, the paying customer. How often people forget that the customer is what keeps them in business. Caveat emptor

Why would you foot the bill for ANY of this? It was their shoddy work/part that caused the problem, they should be eating the entire thing with a smile and a big fat apology, including the tow. And replacing your aluminum drive shaft.

Alright guys - thanks for the feedback. I was giving them benefit of the doubt. The guy's attitude was "shit happens." I'll go in today and demand to talk to the owner. The more I google about this and talk to people, the more it sounds like they simply didn't seat the c-clip properly.

No resolve today. Owner was on the phone so he said the owner would call me when he gets off the phone. 2 hours later they're closed and no phone call. He's down to only having to pay for the labor on one of the ujoints, but still would cost me $25.

If I don't hear from the owner by the time I get out of work tomorrow, I'm asking for my parts back, going to file complaints with BBB, and blast the **** out of their company on all social media outlets.

Sounds reasonable to me. They should have already done everything in their power to make this right - including purchasing you another aluminum shaft, since they wrecked yours.

On another note - this is a great example of why everyone should have AAA. You can actually sign up for it and use it the same day. Last year when my DD wouldn't start in the parking lot at work, I called AAA and signed up . . . 30 mins later called them back and got a tow to the shop . . . then got another tow to a second shop when the first shop couldn't fix it.

AAA's annual membership for two members (myself and Michelle) is $80; so I figure that with those two tows, I got about three years' worth of dues back in the first two days of being a member . . .
