  • SVO 30# Red Top Injectors

The engine is pretty much ready to go back in the car, but right now I need to make a decision: stick with the stock injectors, or upgrade to SVO 30# Red Tops? My (admittedly brief) search didn't really provide any solid answers. Just thinking that if I need to do injectors, now is the time. The injectors I have now are from my old engine, 150k miles, many of which weren't exactly healthy. I know the yellow plastic part is broken on at least one of them. Engine specs are:

    353 c.i., stock rebuild w/ forged pistons, 10.9:1 CR
    Lunati 60121 cam - 221/229 duration/ .549"/.565" lift w/ 1.6rr's, 112* LSA
Mild ported heads, stock valves, 176cc intake runner, around 250cfm or so @ .550" lift

Also, I have a lead on a set of red tops with 500 miles on them, what price should I pay? (the guy didn't list any prices and only said to make offers)

I would offer maybe 250. Brand new they are about 300, with a warrenty. Another question to ask if they were flow matched. If not then you can haggle a bit more possibly.

I believe The red top SVO 30# are what I have in my car. I say go for it.

If your getting a tune, might as well just pay for the tune once.

FWIW i have a bigger setup and im still running stock injectors. (370rwhp). Car runs just fine if not very well, But I have no idea what their duty cycle is and id be willing to bet they are somewhere around maxed out. I plan on changing to 36 pounders when I convert to 24x. A shorter duty cycle is preferable.

Ah yeah i was thinking Peter has an LS1 car.. my bad. I don't know too many peeps that have the svo redtops on their LT1's i'm not even sure what stock LT1 injectors were rated at. I'd say go for it, but talk with somebody that tunes first to see if there isn't a better option / flow rate as these 30# flow at 36# at our line pressures.

That's what I'm thinking, just do everything I want to change now and get the tune right from the get-go (instead of dealing with changing the tune every time I change something else).

Stock LT1 injectors are 24# iirc. I don't know who's gonna do my tune. Steve (BLKHAWK) hasn't responded the last couple of times I tried getting a hold of him, so I think I've given up on that. Otherwise I was probably gonna try to get a hold of this "Dr. Phil" guy people keep talking about.

Phil usually doesn't touch LT1's unless they're 24X. Just FYI

No, I don't. He deleted a couple codes off my PCM last fall, then I tried a couple of times to get a hold of him at the beginning of this season, but never got any response.

Are these (or similar) injectors available from Ford Racing Performance Parts? Maybe I'll be able to swing something with my connections there.

I run cleaned/refurbished red tops in my IROC, got them on ebay for $50 I got really lucky, but if you search around you can still find some good deals.

Don't exclude the newer style injectors. The Bosch "white giants" are 36lb, but will flow 32lb at 43.5psi. I've seen cleaned sets for about 100-125 on ebay.

With a stock pump, does it even make sense to upgrade injectors? Can the stock pump even crank out enough fuel to really push the stock injectors to a high duty cycle?

I had an ac delco fuel pump only last about 20k miles, so ive always wondered if that had something to do with it

On paper, the pump should support about 540 at the crank, if they truly are 190lph pumps. I would say up to 400-450 range would be a safe/reliable estimate. A Racetronix hotwire kit wouldn't hurt though

I think you would be fine.

Worst case scenario you can get a tune from MadTuner or PCM for less. They will get you very close.

My tune for my hot cam LT1 was damn near perfect.

What cam do you have again?
