Thanks jderry, that was what i was looking for.....as far as extremely lose, what would be considered "extremely lose"? Also, if i go with the keyed hub, is it fool proof if i install the hub onto the key on the crank, that it will be installed correctly? In other words, as long as the hub is installed onto the keyed crank correctly, i should have no concern of it being out of balance?

the hub your referring to is the harmonic balancer pulley I believe. it is a tight press fit. to install you need a installer kit. It threads into crank and then there is a washer and a bearing . you tighten a nut on the long threaded rod to slowly press the harmonic pulley on the crank. Then remove the nut bearing and rod and install the bolt. this by NO means should go on easy. I think you have wrong harmonic balancer. or you have ruined the crank by wearing it down.sigpic

Truth. It's called a crank hub though, the LT1's do not use a conventional harmonic balancer, it's just a crank hub and crank pulley.Originally posted by 98blackbeauty View Postthe hub your referring to is the harmonic balancer pulley I believe. it is a tight press fit. to install you need a installer kit. I made my own crank hub tool using a section of grade 8 threaded rod, some nuts, and a handful of washers (as well as some assembly lube to keep things turning when the tension made it difficult). Overall, I think I spent maybe $15 for everything? The expensive part was the threaded rod, because it was only sold in 4' sections.
Here are some instructions to make your own:

Same way I made mine. Everything was easy as pie, honestly. Hub isn't keyed, neither is the pulley. Really no way to screw it up, assuming you have the right parts.Nick H.

That's funny both Brians 95 and my old 95 Firebird had a harmonic balancer pulley, anyway auto zone or oreillys have hub installer and remover kits. rent for zero dollars.sigpic

Yeah, your correct, was thinking of hub and balancer/pulley all as one piece.sigpic

Thanks everyone for the info. My problem is when I got the new hub I used a installer kit to press it on but in about two months it just worked lose and began spinning on my crank. Now when I put it on, apparently the hub wore down and now it just goes on without having to press it on. I have no means of getting a hold of any mics to measure the end of the crank. Is there any way to install the hub and pulley so that it is un balanced? Is there any way to tell if the hub and pulley are not balanced? Thanks guys. Thanks,
Stephen

Just an update guys.....after measuring my crank it turned out it was actually the crank hub that had wore down and not the crankshaft. After talking to the guys at Jegs, I ended up with a nice new slotted hub and balancer. Since the install I have had zero problems so far. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. Now onto to replacing my Opti and water pump this weekend...
Thanks,
Stephen
