  • ****I think I have a BIG problem****

Hello everyone, I'm not sure of the reasoning but here's what happened. About 2 months ago I replaced my crank hub with a new OEM one with new bolt. Well, a couple of nights ago is was coming home. Just I i turned into my driveway, my headlights started dimming. My SES light came also. I assumed the alternator had just went out. Next morning I raised the hood to inspect it. I grabbed the serpentine belt to check its tension when I noticed that the complete assembly would turn freely by hand. The AC compressor, crank hub, alternator.....everything attached to the crank would roll freely. Well, I knew that was not correct so I put the car on ramps to get a better look underneath. I found that the crank hub I had installed several months earlier was lose and would turn. I assumed that the bolt had just backed out even though I used medium thread lock. I removed the serpentine and the crank hub. After cleaning everything back up, I attempted to re install my hub. Here's where the problem starts......there is something that looks like a solid piece of steel about .05" right inside the hub hole. My hub won't even go on far enough to take the wobble out the hub. Basically there is something keeping my hub from going back on the crank......Is there any chance my crank has slid forward or something? Has anyone ever seen anything like this?.....I don't know what to do so any help is much appreciated......
    Thanks,
    Stephen

If the damper was spinning on the snout of the crank it is likely it wore the snout down. It is unlikely that the crank would be pushed forward as that would mean you knocked the thrust bearing out of it and the car probably wouldn't want to hold oil pressure.

Can you get a flash light and see if you cant see whats possible obstructing it?

I checked everything I could and tookmampicture also. Turns out that the hub actually only goes that far onto the crank....it's just real lose. I actually got the hub to go on just by hand. It seems that the hub may have been spinning and did in fact wear down. I re torqued the hub to 72 ft/lbs and the car started right up. Good oil pressure, alternator is charging etc. for some reason my temperature gauge shoots straight up but the coolant is not even warm.....thinking that may be the thermostat gone bad. Anyways, is there any option to remedy this problem of the hub coming lose again? I'm thinking about doing an under pulley system since I don't use my AC anyways. I'm sure as easy as the hub went on it will surely come lose again......

Actually they do from factory but I was told its not required to put back in......plus there is no key slot in my new hub....

I contacted my local Stealership and asked their mechanic. I explained to him that the new crank hub did not come with a slot for a keyway....his reply was that i did not need one. Do they make a crank hub that actually has a groove cut for the keyway?
                Thanks,

If it were up to me, I'd head on down to my local pick a part (parts galore) and pull an LT1 apart that they have just setting there. If you see something different from what you have, take your parts up the counter, pay, and go home and fix your car. If you see the same thing, seek alternate repairs (measure crank snout while you're there to see if yours has been worn down).

If there isn't a key - you'll need to use some calipers to measure the od of the crank snout and the id of the balancer.

My guess is the snout is wore down enough from the balancer spinning that it's going to be a a loose fit no matter what you do.

Another option might be to get a crank pinning kit like they use for prochargers. You'd want the one that installs the pins in the end of the crank. Install the balancer and pin it so it can't spin free. Not ideal but might work.

^ This is solid advise right here. I didn't think of that but having heard it thats probably the direction I would go.

You could buy a keyed LT1 hub, as long is it isn't extremely loose.

Then go to o'murrays and get a set of woodruff keys and use the one that fits correctly.
