Are the obx headers for the lt1s any good?

  • #2
Depends on who you talk to. I love mine. They are very close to the steering shaft. I had my motor out when I installed mine.

Search ls1tech, there is a big thread on it.

They are as good as any other header out there. With the age of the cars, nothing is going to fit everything.

In my opinion no because of the fit. Many here will disagree with me.

It all depends on what you're looking for. Are you looking for perfect fitment? If so, spend the big bucks on Kooks. If you're willing to have to make adjustments to make them fit, then you can have stainless steel headers for relatively cheap that will last a lot longer than any non-stainless header on the market.

Sometimes you do and sometimes you get some overpriced

Not all of us have $$$ - sometime, effort and good old hotroding is better than opening the wallet.

Bullshit....next. It's not about cracking the wallet. What's your time worth? Busting knuckles because you took a shortcut and claim "its hotrodding" is a cop out.

OP (Greg)...its your call. Ive heard just as many good things as bad with OBX headers. They appear to be "decent" having seen a couple sets, but fit is a crap shoot. Your time, your money. Personally, I opt for something that percentage wise would give me the best opportunity to fit without "hotrodding" it too much.

I can't speak for the LT1 headers - I've only installed the LS1 headers.........so take my info with a grain of salt.

My time is worth money - but to me I'll spend an hour or two of work to save $600 on a set of headers. That's good money that can be spent elsewhere. My car was built on a beer budget. The only high dollar part I have is the MWC rear - if I had to do it again there is no way Eric would get my money.

I might have gotten a good set to - I just had to clearance the kmember which too all of 10 minutes with a die grinder, and I angled the drivers side collector up. Also when I had them off this spring I turned them into a set of "race" headers. Makes changing the plugs easier.

Now if you don't have the tools or skills to make changes to them if they don't fit properly - then yes they aren't a good buy. If not your wasting money.

Some of us take pride in building cars - others like to bolt shit together and hope it all works together.

I clearances my k member as well but I did it caused my motor was out and I didn't know where it would sit once it was in the car. Like I said my steering shaft is close to the headers but again, easy fix. For $331 shipped for some stepped stainless headers was worth it to me.

Its all personal choice if you're a gambling man. I was, it's just an lt1. I didn't need Kooks, it's slow either way

or, the OP could just wait a couple months for Superman09 's Huron Speed Headers to be done and get the best of both worlds.

I agree with the statement of pride and workmanship, but ill never take pride ina cut up k-member and pancaked primaries (which the engine needs to breathe through, the point of installing headers in the first place) because i bought a hack product. The way i see it, it costs a company hardly anything more to mass produce a product that fits vs one that doesnt. The difference is one or two extra test fits... Thats it. People like to blame it on "production variances" but guess what, these things have problems in the same areas all the time. Oil filter clearance, k member clearance, and steering shaft.

Yes cause everyone stands under their car and looks at the k-member......

You wouldn't even be able to see where it's ground unless I pulled the headers..... :\

It was a pretty common thing with the ls1 headers since 90% of the fit like shit. It's common practice to cut the casting boss of the block for most header installs in the LS world.

Like all things it depends if you get a Monday or Wednesday part

Hey i get that, youre talking to a guy that smashed up his floor pans with a sledge hammer to fit 3" true duals with full size mufflers. Thing is i did that because it was the only way to do it. Longtube headers on the other hand have been proven to be fitable by other companies such as hooker, jet hot and pacesetter for comparable prices, and im sure jonnys new stainless ones will be too. I know people dont like steel headers for rust, but that hasnt been an issue for me... Not like many people are daily driving LT1s in snow/rain anymore anyway. A steel header will not rust if its kept dry, mine barely have any surface rust and have been on since 05. In other words id buy a steel header that fits over a stainless one that doesnt but i know thats just my opinion.

Anyway my recommendation is to wait for Jonnys they should be a game changer in bang for the buck.
