  • Tune up LT1

Ive heard a ton of storys already on how hard it is to do a tune up on an lt1. I need a tune up done and I do wanna do it myself, but im wondering how difficult it is and whats needed to do the job. I also head its good to replace the opti spark and everything while your at it. Looking for some advice on this job before i get it started. Thanks.

Tune up would usually be the spark plug, spark wires at the very least. How many miles are on the car?

Yes, a tuneup on an LT1 is more difficult than most vehicles (distributor placement, tight engine compartment), but it is still not that bad of a job. However, if you decide to replace the opti, it will be a decently costly operation.

      A tuneup usually consists of:
      Sparkplugs
      Sparkplug wires
      Air filter
And for vehicles with a distributor, a cap and rotor.

If that is on a stock opti, I would recommend replacing it.

how about if i just wanted the plugs and wires done. what should i know before i start the job? do i have to remove anything to get acess to them? ive heard that on the passenger side its very difficult to access the plugs.

Plugs and wires are not bad to do. There is nothing you need to remove, but one tip I would suggest is that the passenger side rear plug is easiest to get to from underneath the car.

Ok and for plugs and wires what do you think are good parts. I've heard far to much controversy.

For wires, I would suggest some AC Delco's
For plugs, I would recommend these:

Sounds good. So is it just a matter of wiggling around? Is there enough room for just a regular spark plug socket

And when he says the rear plug is easiest to get to from underneath, don't think that means it's going to be easy... it just means instead of taking two hours to get that single spark plug out, it will take 1 hour and 45 minutes...

Certainly, when things are out there's more room to get a good angle on the spark plugs. You'll probably want crowfoot wrenches and universals.

Might as well budget in a pair of headers because youre gonna be in for a real treat doing that job with stock manifolds in the way of every single thing you need to get to
