  • Exhaust Idea: Help

I'm planning on changing up my exhaust sometime in the next couple of weeks on my Z28 and would like to get some opinions.
At the moment, the piece of pipe where the cat used to be is starting to crack at the welds and is loud a hell and I can't take the drone and neither can my girlfriend.
    My plan
    - Midlength (maybe shorty so they fit nicely and better ground clearance) headers to a single 2.75 inch exhaust, then about where the cat is normally at put a round borla xr1 muffler to an electric cutout right after that so when I want it to scream all I need is the flip of a switch, then to a y-pipe with a round magnaflow straight through muffler on each side dumped out the back to some nice shiny tips
This way I can open the cutout to here the extremely loud wonderful sounding xr1 and close it up for a nice deep cruising tone when I'm trying to listen to my tunes

    Any Thoughts?

I'd run longtubes. They net more power and you have ground clearance for them.

Do you plan on running true duals or a Y pipe?

        Y pipe
I'd like to save as much $ as possible and use whatever pipe I can from my stock exhaust system. Only part I should have to hack off is around where a stock muffler would normally be and go to a y out the back with some fresh pipe so I can use the two magnaflows.
How difficult is it to drop in a set of longtubes? I really don't mind missing out on a few hp here and there but if it would help with mpgs then i'm all for it. I get around 23-24 on the highway, which isn't bad at all.. but an extra mile or two on a tank would be nice

Eh, you're driving the wrong car for fuel economy even though its pretty good. Mine stock would hit 28mpg on the highway. Long tubes are pretty easy thing, they just slip up from underneath, just have to disconnect the steering and then put it back together. You can get galvanized pipe cheap mandrel bent from JEGS or Summit Racing. I got my system welded and hung for like 70 bucks. If I am not mistaken the stock piping is crush bent which is not horsepower's friend.

Alright nice. Well I think I may go with Lt's if I have the cash and just go from there. Do you think with the two magnaflows on each side out the back that it'll be nice and quiet? I still want to here it but I would like it to be close to stock if not a little deeper which is why I figured magnaflow. Nice deep tone without too much restriction. Then open the cutout for pure ear sex when I feel like not hearing anything at all but the exhaust.

Well if you are going to run dual mufflers might as well go true dual exhaust. If you are running a why pipe just run a stock replacement muffler. (1 in 2 pipes out to give the look of duals) I have to Flowmaster 40s and electric cutouts. The car sounds sexy when the exhaust is closed going through the 40s which are Flowmasters most aggressive series. Opening a cutout will also net you more power.

                  Here's the setup
Kind of a funky setup honestly... I think you're going to lose power if anything.

Your headers will need a Y-pipe in order to run through a single XR1, then from there into a cutout is kinda bass akwards. You would want to cutout as close to the headers as possible.

So lets say you still go Headers, y-pipe, XR1, cutout, you'll still really only have room to run a single pipe over the axle (unless you find someone that really knows what they're doing, along with a panhard bar relocation). After the axle you best bet is just to get a single enter, dual exit style like most catbacks have. There's not a ton of real estate back there for 2 full sized mufflers when they're not necessary.

If I were you, and didn't want to go with a mass produced, well fitting, successfully tested, minimal cursing involved exhaust system I would go with something custom like below...

Headers, 3" y-pipe, 3" cutout, xr1, 3" single over the axle, borla (or insert favorite brand) single enter, dual exit muffler with dual exit tips

Hey man I still have these BBk shorties with Y pipe and there is even a cutout welded at the end of the Y that I would let go also. Hell I'd even make you a deal on my whole exhaust setup. Its BBk nickel plated shorty headers, 3" catless Y pipe, 3" cutout welded at the Y merge, then 3" over the axle with a Moroso spiralflow dumped after the axle (tucked up real nice). This is how it sits right now looking from the rear from the ground
