lt1 no start no spark??

my buddie called from vasser tonight his friend got home car ran fine, went to take off and nothing, no spark, asked me i said coil or probly opti, they said it ran fine and why just dead, as far as i understand they can go out just like that, with no warning, when i got my first one done it started ran fine shut it off and that was it. needed opti right away. is there any othere reason for no spark.

If its a 96 or 97 it could also be a crank senser. or an ignition modgual
