So I have drove my car stock for the summer and decided...MOAR POWER!!!!

What it comes down to is this, my car has 158,000 miles on it. I think the car needs new opti, wires, plugs, water pump maybe. If I went with a cam I may need headwork/ new heads. I would also guess that bearings should be replaced too. Basically my shits worn out.

What I have been thinking about is a 5.3 LS motor just like Spencer has. After seeing his car this weekend..I need it. I am not totally concerned about power, more about reliability, sound, and FUN. Any cam'd LS motor will have enough power for me.

How much do you think I could do the swap for?
Anyway to use my LT1 T56 with a 5.3 LS based motor?
How hard is the electrical wiring?

Something I have been thinking about, dont have the money for it right now but I would like to have a 'someday' plan.

    Your input is appreciated.

not one with 158k miles. IMO its not worth the trouble, if you dont want to go with a LS1 or larger. You still have to buy all of the same basic things (trans, PCM, wiring harness, k member, etc, headers) whether you go LS1 or 5.3.

if your worried about reliable your better off dropping the motor doing a bottom end rebuild (new bearings, check crank) put in a cam, full exhaust and have your heads check by a pro. and do a ls1 pcm conversion with all that your prob going to be way under the budget of a 5.3 or ls1 swap and just as reliable and just as much fun for a summer DD. but thats my thoughts.

agreed 100% just a very basic rebuild with ARP rod bolts and new rings and your LT1 shortblock will take about anything you can throw at it N/A

I replaced my bearings at 164,000 cause I had the motor sitting on a stand............................................. ...........and the original berings looked beautiful. Stop worrying and just drive the damn thing and fix it when it breaks. Everyone knows LT1s run forever, than masively break all at once, than run forever again, lol. If you want an LS1 car, It would be cheaper to just sell it and buy an entry level LS1 car. When its all said and done, reliability is all in how you take care of it, not millage or design. Eric L

I agree with all of these guys. Kolin's old (who knows how many miles it had on it...) 93 Trans Am LT1 pulled a car length on a C6 LS2 corvette with a cam and ported heads... I'd just build a high 12 second LT1 if I were you...

Just continue with building a bolt on LT1 with the right set of gears and you will be suprised at how the car responds. I still find my car a blast to drive, and its run high 12s for over 6 years. You have to keep your car and your goals in prospective. Keep it simple, and keep in mind what you use it for. Eric L
