  • Serious 10 bolt question

I think the 10 bolt in my car is on its way out.

no whinning but it has a binding, metal on metal sound. Used to make this noise when I would do a MI Left or turn very sharp. Seems to be doing it all the time now, I am scared to drive the car.

Ive checked the diff fluid, and replaced the diff fluid.
Is there anything else I can do?

Do I fix this one or just get another one? I have zero experience with failing rear ends.

What did it look like when you had the cover off Nate?

    Used to own a Firebird.

Nothing looked out of the ordinary, no metal shavings, fluid did have a lot of bubbles though.

      What should I look for?

I think that the noise is comming from between the wheel and the diff. IDK what its called, lol but the tube that moves my rim. Hows that for high tech.

If its worse on turns, its probably the posi unit. Or it could be a wheel bearing. If the ring and pinion still look good, that's a good sign.
When in doubt, Whip it out !

It still does a burnout just fine, doesnt feel like I am hurting it at all when doing that.

Its like my car wants to be driven on the edge all the time, just cruising along it feels like its going to break.

When you changed the fluid did you put in the posi additive?

Sounds like a textbook example of a wheel bering. God knows ive taken out enough of those in 10 bolts, lol. Eric L

The gear oil I used said it was for posi traction rear ends. I used Mobil ...dont remember what the numbers were. Something crazy high like 75w or something.

Just took kyle for a ride, it appears to do it worst when turning left. We think its the right rear area.

So to put a new wheel bearing in...is that something I can do?

You have to pull the axle, and have a new one pressed on. So, yeah, you can do it, if you have a bering press.

We used the old wheel bearing to tap the new one in.

Appears to have done the trick. I know the rear end has good fluid(again) and seen no other issues with the rear end.

Soon enough I will have re done everything on the car...then I can do it over again!

Eric, you going to fbody at barns?

Thats what i want to be able to say about my car after I start road racing it 5 or 6 times a season. "Lets see here, ive been through 6 sets of wheel bearings, 4 sets of ball joints, 4 sets of shock absorbers, and about 120 oil changes"
