I've been around a couple 4th gen engine swaps done that way, and I have to say, it was pretty straightforward and easy.

Definitely out the bottom. They were design for the factory to install the engines from underneath, not from above, so you'll have a much easier time of taking them out that way.

When we pulled my motor we went out the top. Took us 7 hours working slowly with hand tools and jack stands. Luckily mine was only a V6. If it had 2 more cylinders I would die. Thats why when the motor goes back in we are definitely dropping the k-member (Since I have to replace it anyway).

Ive always pulled mine out the bottom. I dont put the back in the air at all. And I dont lift the car by the core support. I just put the front on ramps and slowly work it up in the air and put some heavy duty jack stands under the frame behind the k member. Has always worked for me. Everyone has thier own way of doing it. And through trial and error you will find the way that works for you. Eric L

I know the 3.4L is really easy to take out the top (with the trans still attached). the biggest problem with that was removing the intake manifold.

We took my LT1 out the top, and it was brutal. We mostly did it that way because we didn't know any better and the cover of the Haynes manual had a picture of taking an LT1 out the top of the car. If we ever have to take it out again (which I certianly hope is NEVER), it's definitely coming out the bottom.

This is the second year in a row I've had to take the LT1 out of my firebird and both times I have taken it out the bottom. Not that bad if you take your time. The second time I was able to do it by myself in less than a day.

I've did it both ways, out the bottom with a hoist and a cart to set everything on. And at home it comes out the top, it might take a little longer but its not a race to remove it! I have seen many scary pictures of people removing it out the bottom at home! I enjoy working on my car so if it takes a little longer BIG DEAL Either way be safe!
