Before I changed the gears and converter, I got right around 20mpg bopping around town. I had 2.74's in it. Changed to 3.73's and got a 2800rpm converter and shift kit put in and my milage went down to 18.5mpg. And I know that I have been getting into the throttle a lot more due to the "fun factor". Car is WAAAAAY faster and it didn't really hurt milage. Only other mods on car are flowmaster cat back, air lid, and SSRA cold air intake.

If you are just cruising around town, then the higher gear ratio probably isn't hurting your mileage too much. I still have 2.73's, and I keep it in 2nd or 3rd gear to prevent the engine from bogging down....but if I had a significantly higher ratio I would just keep it in D or OD and still turn roughly the same RPMs. A higher ratio will affect you more on the highway, of course, because you have no other choice but to turn a high amount of RPMs

I'm going to put 3.73's in my 'bird either later this summer or over the winter, along with the locker. I can't wait to see how much quicker it is after that! It's only got 3.23's right now, and I was running about even with a stock (except for CAI) '95 Formula with 80k fewer miles than mine. My car needs some work, but I know gears and a convertor are going to be the two best "bang for the buck" mods that I can do at this point, without breaking into the more expensive parts and in-depth installations.
Good news though, I work for a place that gives me a 20% discount on car parts, which is pretty useful considering the biggest military discount I get on parts is 10%, and I usually have to fight to get it.Nick H.

I got my gears and posi installed at DTS in Warren. About $950 with new bearings, seals, etc. They did a nice job, rear is nice and quiet. When in doubt, Whip it out !

converter and gears are not going to help mileage around town, but the fun factor is second to none

They were a lot cheaper than a lot of other places. They replaced the posi (had a 2 series posi) with a new Detroit Trutrac, the gears, bearings, seals, etc. When in doubt, Whip it out !
