Take the belt off. If "squeek/chirp" still persists, long screwdriver to the ear listening to engine internals.

sprayed the belt with WD40, didn't do anything. I also checked the header bolts this morning. I could tighten one up a bit, but other than that they seemed tight. That didn't fix the problem either.Originally posted by steddy View PostYou could try shooting the belt with WD40 before removing it. If it's a sqeaky idler, or perhaps a worn belt, it will silence the noise as it's sprayed. Also, since it seems to be going with the pulse of the motor, I'd check the header flanges, where they bolt to the exhaust system.
I have it sitting at a dealer shop right now for a diagnosis while I'm at work. I should have it back around lunchtime.

Hope the dealership doesn't give you a crappy diagnosis. Hard to tell from the video it sounds metallic clanking to me but again hard to tell over a computer speaker. Definitely the best advice given is to remove the belt and use a long screwdriver. Put the screwdriver against different items and put your ear to the handle.- Brian Meissen

they said it's a lifter, but they didn't remove the belt like I asked them to when I dropped it off. I told them to do that and get back to me. No further word yet.

Lifter kinda sucks... definitely not the easiest to get to though it's not horrible. When my dad's lifter collapsed we actually tore the whole engine out to replace the lifters. You should be able to replace all the lifters (replace them all, don't just replace the 1) by removing the intake manifold and pulling the pushrods out.- Brian Meissen

where would I get these lifters on short notice? also, how dire is this issue? I was planning a roadtrip to visit some friends in Indianapolis this weekend. I was actually planning on being gone by now, but the frickin' dealer pulled the belt, checked the stuff out, and let it sit there. I made it clear that I wanted to pick it up over lunch. They called at 10:15 to tell me their diagnosis, and that's when i asked them to remove the belt and see what they got. I called them at quarter to 1 and the belt still wasn't back on. Now i gotta wait for a ride from somebody so I can get the car and get going. I'm going to be 3 hours behind schedule because that stupid dealer can't make a 2-minute phone call once they're done. I'm pissed.

was there more you needed to do than lifters? That seems like more work than necessary. Removing the intake manifold isnt hard with the engine in the car...Originally posted by meissen View PostLifter kinda sucks... definitely not the easiest to get to though it's not horrible. Depending on what's really going on I wouldn't recommend it. If it's a collapsed lifter then I don't think it'd be good to drive it long distance or really much at all... Someone can correct me here because I vaguely remember stories of people driving for years with a bent valve and other internal issues but I think if the lifter is collapsed then your valve isn't opening correctly and thus your cylinder is going to be effed while you drive it.Originally posted by alone_and_insane View Postwhere would I get these lifters on short notice? also, how dire is this issue? We did headers and he had a blown head gasket. It was honestly a lot easier from a "working on the car" perspective to just drop the engine out than bending over the long nose of a freshly painted car.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28 View Postwas there more you needed to do than lifters? I think I'm gonna see if I can get a second opinion from a shop that I'm more convinced isn't trying to get more money out of me...but I have much more urgent issues with my trans that need to be addressed.

I looked at it again with the guy at AutoZone, and he also confirmed it's a rocker/lifter issue. I really need to get it taken care of by the end of next week (impending 500 mile drive). Any suggestions for what rockers/lifters I should get? New or used? OEM or aftermarket?

took the valve covers off today. I'm pretty sure the only thing that accomplished was pissing me off. I'm pretty sure the problem is on the driver's side, but I couldn't see any difference from one side to the other. I still have no idea how to fix that valvetrain issue.
