  • 94 Formula WONT START HELP!!

Bought the car last week, it ran fine when I got it. Cleaned throttle body and decided to run seafoam through it. Drove it for two days after I did it and woke up the next morning and it won't start.I tried cranking it for a while and nothing. Tried starting again a few minutes later and white smoke came out of the intake. I thought maybe it was something behind or under so i pulled off the tube and it was for sure coming for the intake manifold. Fuel pump primes just fine, i figured it might be the fuel filter so I replaced it still nothing. I also now have a check engine light. Kept trying to start it and gave up and read on forums about similar issues. I go outside to smoke a cigarette and just for shits I try to start it, fires right up and runs fine check engine light goes out. I call autozone for a scanner and they give me the key (jumper.) I put it in A&B like Ive read (paper clip method) then turn the key to on, light goes out. It starts humming from underneath the hood like a fan is coming on but light never flashes, I even let it do it for a few minutes thinking maybe it would eventually start, nothing. So now Im stumped. Im thinking its either my FPR or my coil. At first I thought it was the optispark but since it started up the other day and ran fine without missing I ruled that out. Then i saw suggestions to test fuel pressure and if you have low fuel pressure, replace the filter. Well i just put a brand new one in.

My check engine light is on right now after I just tried to start the car, i put the jumper in and it still doesnt want to diagnose anthing. Could it be the fuse for the light thats messing with me? I dont want to start buying things I dont need because I am fairly poor by anyones standards. If anyone is in the detroit area and could come check it out thatd be great. I dont have a digital camera so I cant record a video and the closest murrays/autozone is quite a walk.

This is my daily driver, any help would be appreciated. Id really like to just pull some codes so what am I doing wrong?

I forgot to mention it cranks and after a few seconds sounds like it fires in a cylinder or two, then craps out.

I also read that there's a vent line from the opti to the intake manifold, could I have possibly gotten seafoam down into there, or loosened crap that clogged it?

well if seafoam got into the opti it'll take awhile to dry, but since you go it to start that one time, rule that out. it sounds like its on and off. how did it run when you got it started?

You don't have the vent for 1994 - vented optis were in 1995-1997. Really need to see what those engine codes are that are coming up for the Service Engine Soon.

What is it doing now? not starting? If so, pull a couple of spark plugs see if they are wet from gas and smell of gas. If so probably not the fuel pump. then while you have a plug out clamp it to manafold and see if your getting spark. then you will know which direction to trouble shoot. 1. no gas, 2. no spark.

It ran fine when it started, like normal.

I cant get the SES codes because when i insert the jumper the light goes off and it starts whirring in the engine bay. SES light doesnt blink, just goes out.

Yea its not starting, Ill pull some plugs today.

No one knows why my SES wont flash me my codes?

Are you sure you're doing the right pins? Whirring noise makes me think you're some how turning the radiator fan on...

its not the radiator fans and the correct pins are A and B which are the two top right correct? As in the top right corner and the one left of it?

              http://shbox.com/1/dlc2.jpg

so does that mean i cant check mine like that?

                The Quick Paper Clip Test
Since we are looking at the connector pins, it should be mentioned here that a quick method to see which trouble code or codes are being set in your cars ECM is to jumper the A and B pins of the 12 pin ALDL OBD1 connector with a paper clip. While the car is off, sitting still, turn the ignition key forward while this jumper is in place. Do not start the car. The Service Engine Soon ( SES ) light will flash in a repeating sequence, telling which trouble codes have been set in the ECM. A service manual for your year car will have a chart outlining what each trouble code stands for, or this Trouble Code website can be of help. This paper clip method will tell you the trouble code or codes set in your ECM, but it will not tell you what conditions the trouble code is being set under, or let you clear the trouble codes on the fly, as the ALDL cable and PC setup will.
Yeah, you're definitely using the right pins...

I thought it was possible to do on 1994 (and even think I had done it in the past?)

What you'll probably need to do is go to Murrays/O'Reilly and rent their scan tool. Basically you buy the tool, use it, then return it for a full 100% refund. It'll cost you like $150 at most which sucks to front but you get the money back as soon as you return the scan tool.

all their scan tools are out... should i just buy one, use it, and return it?
I tried starting my car again just now, same thing, but i noticed the oil pressure sat at 0 when trying to crank, it eventually started to move up after turning over for a good 10 seconds. Could that be an issue? I seriously doubt thatd prevent the car from starting though.

I don't think you get oil pressure until the car actually starts - at least I vaguely remember it taking a split second once the car starts for it to work. Have you tried Autozone or the like?

yea i went to autozone and oreillys.
just now i went to oreillys and bought a gm obd1 scanner, which did the same thing as before as the paperclip, something turns on, ses light goes off. This time i traced it back, it sounds like it was coming from the pcm but hoses from my air pump were vibrating and the noise was much louder under the hood ( NOT THE FANS ). I heard when your pcm goes out, itll start running all kinds of random accessories and throwing codes. I cant get any codes but i posted that link before about a guy with a similar issue. Theres also another thread on here from someone with a 2002 tuned pcm in their 99 ls1 i think? It ended up being his pcm too.

So now my list of possible things consists of pcm, optispark, coil, icm, tps

i seriously doubt that anything besides the pcm would keep me from pulling codes, i wish someone could come troubleshoot with me but it seems like everyone is an hour away
i was gonna pull a plug or two today but its half ass raining outside so ill wait till tomorrow
