  • major oil leak..need help!

i finally got my built lt1 dropped in and when i went to fire it today it wouldnt run, couldnt figure it out for a little while but i noticed a puddle under the car....probably about a whole quart of oil.. i unpluged my injectors and got under the car and cranked the motor and i seen a large stream of oil spewing out of the top of the block, behing the driver side cyl head, right near the hole you screw the oil temp/press sensor in.
i pulled the sensor i have in that hole, and re-sealed it and re-installed it. i pulled out my little mirror and checked it from the engine bay while cranking the motor and its NOT coming from the sensors or the hole they thread into, im 100% positive of it.

    any ideas anyone?

are there any oil galley plugs there or something the machine shop may have forgotten to reinstall?

im kinda thinking so, when i crank it the oil is squirting upwards more so that out to the side or just leaking out of something...it a steady, pretty large stream of oil...
it kinda looks like theres a plug right in that area but half of it or so is covered by the cyl head enough to where i wouldnt be able to get a plug in there...
i should be able to get jb weld in there...bad idea? other than that, im going to have to pull the intake and cyl head off and i really dont want to do that but if i have to can i re-use that head gasket? its a brand new felpro gasket and the engine hasnt even fired yet..

I would do it right and not jbweld it at all. Why waste all winter worth of hard work on something so simple. I know its a pain to pull the head but I highly recommend you disassemble and diagnose the issue. I have always been told that any gasket fully torqued has been compressed enough to not reuse, it sucks but trust me it could be much much worse if you had $150 cometic gaskets or the like.

there are galley plugs in front of the trans that the engine builder may have failed to install correctly (or at all). It has to be something seeing a lot of pressure because that sounds like a lot of oil for just a mani leak

You will have to pull the head and install the threaded plug. I have seen it happen. You think the machine shop installed all of them and then they miss one and then you dont notice it until it's too late and the head is installed.
I have heard of people reusing the head gasket if it has NEVER been run but................you would be MUCH MUCH better off replacing it. It is just cheap insurance.
                Good luck

I reused a felpro head gasket on a 305 once...worked fine...it had never been fired or seen any fluids or cylinder compression.

Very bad idea JB welding it! As much as it sucks, go ahead and tear the head off. One of those "6 hour job start to finish for a $1 part." You're used to some hard work on that car though. I've been keeping up on your thread quite a bit.

Yeah, that what I'm gonna wind up doing, I just gotta wait till payday to buy the gaskets. I was just pretty mad then...staying up till 4am every night, finally got the thing ready to fire for the first time in at least a year and a have an oil leak like that..maybe next weekend I guess...
