The fuel gauge is based off the floater on the fuel pump. If the car shut off and won't start I'd reckon the fuel pump went kaput.- Brian Meissen

I would begin with the fuel pump itself. Can you hear it prime when you turn the car on?

an gm mechanic told when the gas tank looses a ground on a gm it cause the fuel gauge to go past full, well i just started checking the wire, making sure it was getting power and was grounded, all the wired are fine and it started right up.
