  • so yesterday i went through 5 starters...

well we got my motor all ready to fire yesterday... and nothing.. so we hooked up a booster to it, and it sounded horrible trying to roll the motor over.. i rolled the starter for about 15 seconds at like 10 sec intervals.. and with in 4 cycles i fried the first starter.. well 3 starters later i put it on and nothing.. not even a turn over.. so i took it off and put it back on and all of a sudden she took off like a bat out of hell and made the correct starting noise while rolling over and fired up on like the third crank.. let it run for like 15 min and all of a sudden it just died.. went to take the starter out and it was hotter than my headers!!! it was so hot that it melted all the electrical inside the starter.. all this black runny stuff was running out of it.. so i know this starter wasnt junk, it only had 1 crank.. so i know there is a issue with the starter cable/ the positive cable.. so now the fun begins and try and figure whats going on, and why the starter is getting so much juice.. any suggestions anyone?? thnanks guys..

Sounds like it's pulling juice..not getting juice. Ever crank the motor over by hand? Did you check your starter pinion to flywheel clearence?

motor cranks over by hand just fine. i asked him if the trans/flywheel/clutch was installed correctly with proper clearances? i personally think its a wiring issue with the batt. harness which is causing the starter or solenoid to pull extra juice. Which eventually drains the battery

check to starter motor gear clearance to the flywheel. sounds like you got it engaged, started the motor, and the the starter motor stayed engaged and it essentially became a generator driven by the motor which is why it burned up.

yeah sounds like its hanging up on the flywheel and turning with the motor... then when it burned up it locked up and stalled the motor.. i would also put some sort of heat sheild or wrap on the starter to protect it from getting heat soaked

thanks guys! and i hope that a shim is the easy fix.. but i am still going to go over all the wiring tonight and make sure like ryan said there is no issues with the harness, i did the wire mod and all the wires are in a different spot now, the red box is down by the coolant revisor.. so i am going to go pick up number 6 today and try the shim.. since i have had a ton of these starters i have a ton of shims what are you guys thinking? 1 or 2 possibly 3? lol

You need to measure it to know how many shims you need.
