Please Help, Grant steering install

Hey Guys,

Been awhile since Iv'e logged on and said hi.

Im looking for some help doing a grant swap on my 97 Z28, I have been looking for a step by step install guide but have so far been unable to find one.

I do have the 3196 install kit, I have have read that you need a steering wheel puller to do the job, but so far I have been able to the remove the steering without one.

However I do have this little metal disk stuck on the column in front of the yellow plastic part which is preventing me from installing the metal block that goes under the black metal bell, and after staring at it for a minute Im starting to think this is what I needed the puller for.

Iv'e included some pics so you can see what I am talking about and where I'm at.

If you guys have done this before or know a link where I can find a step by step install guide I would really appreciate the help.

P.S tried asking this at ls1 tech and all I got for my trouble was a worthless troll. Made me remember there was a reason I hung out at this site.

Thanks! That the exact thing that ticked me off at Ls1tech, I ask for help and some jerk come in and just rails on about how the interior looks awful and I must be part of some wanna be thug posse. I think I have the problem figured out though, that disk was supposed to come off with the wheel ( which means my old wheel was more bust then I realised) so I think if I get a wheel puller I should be able to pull it off. Thanks again though

if i remember correctly my buddy had the same problem on his car and used a puller.... so i think ur are on the right track

Actually, late last night I got a reply to my ls1tech post and it turns out I need a different tool. Here the reply I got from Ls1tech (thanks colin91z!): "What you're seeing in there is the airbag clock-spring. To remove it, first you need the correct tool, which is NOT a steering wheel puller. You need a steering wheel Lock Plate remover. You should be able to pick one up at any local parts store for pretty cheap. Hell most around my area will rent you one for free, just pay a deposit. What this tool does is compress that little metal plate in the middle so you can release the snap ring on the shaft. Once the snap ring is released, the clock spring will come right out of there.

You wont need it anymore seeing as you won't have an airbag, so no need to be gentle with it. Besides, it's gotta go to make room for the adapter anyway. Once you get it out of the way, the install will be pretty straighforward."

now that I have the info I need, I think since I have some time I'm going to create the step by step walk through I was looking for, I just have to put everything back together so I can take pics for the first few steps

Cool! I was hoping someone would come up with a walkthrough for this! The Grant wheel is smaller than I thought compared to the stocker, what size is that?

Too bad I didn't see it earlier. I just did the same job a few weeks ago. I could of told you that you needed that other tool.

Not sure honestly, I think the original is 14 the new on is 12", I can tell you that I have put the wheel on just to see how it would look, and the clearance for viewing the gauges and everything is great, but if its really that important I can measure for you

don't damage the clock spring when you remove it, if you have steering wheel controls you can give that piece to me as mine is broken

No I don't have radio controls on my wheel sorry, but i would let you have it if I did, what exactly is the clock spring? on a side note I do have an airbag module for sale cheap lol

Not really looking for size difference, although a picture of the installed wheel would be appreciated! Just want to see how much different it looks. . .

OK so I finished the install today, I took more or less step by step pictures lol and I'll be getting a write up together within a few days. I have a few things I would have done differently now that its done, but all in all I'm happy with it.
