I say either is fine, I am glad this thread came up cause I did not know this stuff.. So my 83 did not come with a 3rd brake light factory but the 91-92 hatch did, so I have to run one cause of the hatch? I am going to run one cause it looks weird on the hatch if you don't but I was just wondering about the different parts of diff cars..

That would be my guess too.. 86 was the year 3rd brake lights became mandatory..

Jess if you put a hatch on with a 3rd brake light and don't hook it up, I would bet you'd get a fix it ticket at some point.. Even though it wasn't required for your year vehicle.

          I would leave it.

Third brake lights save lives. Too many stupid people out there, last thing you need is some teen texting on their phone not paying attention and totaling your car from the rear. Put a overlay on it or whatever but more lights the better.

You know, I had been thinking of doing this to my car as well, started thinking about it when I still had the Camaro. . . Glad I didn't do it, but at the same time, I have a Cadillac LED 3rd Brake Light, I think it's the one from STS or Catera or something, that would make for a really cool add-on to the roof, if I could make it look like a stock install. . . Or maybe mounting it behind the back glass and fiberglassing an enclosure for it or something.

If you really want to do it, you can get a small add-on LED 3rd brake light on ebay, and just mount it behind the back glass. That's what I'm thinking of doing, because the wiring for my stock 3rd BL is bad, and it doesn't work anyway. haha
