  • Lower airbox mod, non WS6 cars

I'm thinking of something after seeing the ram air firebird airboxes, how the opening in the lower airbox seems to be taller because the lower part is taller itself.

What if I just put bushings on the mounting bolts of my lower airbox and got longer bolts to open up the gap a little more? Seems pretty short right now, about 1" or maybe 1.5" Nothing seems to mount to it or be supported by it, unless it's connected to the fan? I'll look into it tomorrow.

Don't waste your time. Buy an FTRA, SSRA, or something similar and some weather stripping and seal your lid. Buy doing this your going to pressureize your airbox at higher speeds. Way more functional than anything else IMO.

definately do not raise the lower airbox. It will ruin the entire seal of it and engine heat will be able to heat up ALL the air coming in. Like mentioned before buy an SSRA or FTRA kit. I have an SSRA and love it. My airbox is not pressurized because I left the front WS6 raised opening open as well, but at least this way all the air coming in should be cold.

I have the non ws6 airbox with a slp cold air kit, it worked perfectly fine for me but this winter I sealed the airbox completly so it would only get air from under the car and I love it the foam I have in front of the airbox to seal that gap gets sucked in from time to time just a bit so I know its sealed properly and throttle response is great. I would highly recommend this.

Keep in mind that the lower airbox is molded as part of the upper radiator support also. And by raising it you may cause fitment isses with the radiator.
Any of the above mentioned CAI kits will show a better gain. I personally have the FRA (Free Ram Air) mod and did notice a gain over the debaffled Ram Air hood esp. as speeds incease.

Guess I'll be doing the free ram air mod soon then because my car won't be seeing much dirt after this summer. I didn't think it was part of the core support at first, probably not looking close enough.
