  • car keeps dieing

ok i have a 1994 pontiac trans am and it keeps stalling out on me. iv tested the fuel pump and its good so its down to the coil or the distributor i dont know what it is anymore its died before and it would not start for and hour or two i woke up in the morning and it fired right up. i was driving home and it died again and it seems like im not getting spark i think its the coil but not sure yet any suggestions?

    Thanks Kyle J.

Opti or the coil, and i just gave my last Opti for a 94 to missy for free. Sorry dude.
best to buy a 95 Opti rotor and cap, It'll help but Wont be as good as a REAL 95 but that takes a new timing cover, gear, and cam.

Yeah I'm more then betting its the opti, 94's are pile of junks.
which is why my car has a title of a 94 but a drivetrain of a 95/96

94 Fbodys have a OPTI THAT IS NOT!!!!! VENTED 95 and up is vented, they corrode and die, 95 and up i have never had a problem with, Its not the 94 motors or anything its just the opti's that make 94 fbodys hated.

Meh, if you think that it might be the coil or the opti, do the coil first. WAYYYYY easier to do, and its only like $30 vs 500 for an opti.

Dumb question but are you leaking any coolant? Feel the weep hole under the water pump. If you replace the opti, replace the water pump!! You'll regret it if you don't. Murrays sells a nice one ftr. And buy a delco opti, they put delco in these cars for a reason. Or you could buy an msd one your choice. Good luck

Go to shbox.com there is a very simple opti test and I think a coil test. Before you just throw money and parts at it it could be worthwhile to do some tests. It might not be either one.
Also Opti sparks do get a lot of bad rap! Ignore it, my car has 120,000 and on original. If you have a 1st, 2nd ,3rd gen no one ever runs that many miles on a distributor cap and rotor. People get upset when they fail cause they cost a lot.

It could be the fuel pump, check the fuel pressure. It only does it when driven for awhile?does it sputter?check fuel pressure at idle and let us know what you get.

hey thanks for all the info i replaced the coil because the old one was high on resistance but that wasnt it the car died again today and i had no spark even at the coil so its not the opti. iv done pressure tests on it and its all good i do not leak coolant but we think it might be the crank sensor but we can find one so now we dont think it has one does the car only run off a cam sensor?

if its a 94 it does not have a cam or crank sensor, check the control moduel, clean it and the surface it mounts to with electrical cleaner, make sure you put die-electric grease on the back side.

Sounds like you found the problem.
