  • Header decisions, decisions!

There is one hour and 31 minutes left in an ebay auction for some shorty headers. Do I get them for $150 +shipping or wait to get longtubes? How big of a PITA is it to get the longturbes installed inside the engine bay rather then doing it now while the engine is out? Anyone look at my other post with the longtubes I found for cheap? Will they work? He is selling them with an LT1 from a caprice. He is willing to sell the headers seperate. I didnt know if they would fit though, there is a pic. So far I have one know but I am hoping for a bunch of yes'!

the headers you posted earlier wont work. DONT get shorties that would be pointless considering the factory manifolds are practically shorties already. If you seriously can't spend over 400 in total don't bother. You will need a new Y-Pipe for the headers, new gaskets, and 02 sensor extensions. Might even need O2 simulators, I'm not sure on your year. If you dont have that much money wait until you do because you will regret it if you buy junk or try to do a half job. Looks like you need to do some more research, there is also race style headers and ones that still have emissions, if you remove emissions you will need block off plates too.. I went the cheapest possible way and bought ebay stainless longtubes for my ls1 with an ebay y pipe. I think by the end I spent almost 400 bucks after factoring in 02 extensions, band clamps, headers, y pipe, gaskets, and header bolts. I didnt need 02 simulators because I had my sensors tuned out with hptuners. That is with wholesale prices because we run a shop as well..

I have already got the blockoffs ordered. I have a 97. I knew the longtubes were far better i am just trying to find a cost efficent set. I found o2 ext and stage 8 bolts for $60 or so second hand. I guess i will just keep looking. Is it really diffucult getting the headers in and out with the motor in?

I'd definitely recommend doing it while the motor is out - it wouldn't make sense to do it any other way.

unless the engine was in already.. then it wouldn't make sense to take the engine out just to install the headers..

I know a few people who have put LT's in their camaro with the engine still under the hood. It took them a good part of the day....i heard its a pain trying to get the car high enough off the ground without a lift. PM mike (mtuggle) he put his LT's in. he should be able to help you out with any details you need.

X2 I've had both, shorties suck monkey butt. The longtubes were easier to put in, sound better, and perform better. I did mine with the engine in, wasn't hard at all, especially if you get rid of the emissions crap.

                      Shorties are junk!

I have done 4 different sets of LT's this year and by far the best over all were the Pace Setters w/ y-pipe, coated for 600.
They are by far the easiest to work around once they are in the car.
Install was the same as any other LT.

You will have fun with the Stage 8 locking bolts and LT's on a LT-1

If you have a set of jack stands you can get the LT's in but you will need to have them up almost all the way.

You will need to remove your starter & alt. to get the passenger side in.
You will have to raise the motor on each side so you have room to slide them up into the car.

Its an LT1 so hell no they arent. The garbage manifolds are why LT1s gain more from headers than LS1s.

Otherwise i completely agree with you. Shorties WILL make a noticeable difference but i still believe in longtubes or dont bother at all.
