  • Should I buy this 98 trans am?

I'm not really knowledgeable on the LS cars and I wanted some input.

"1998 trans am LS1 5.7L RARE purple color BEAUTIFUL!!!! factory painted this way when ordered by previous owner.. i am 2nd owner. was purchased from a sheriff in 02 who bought this car brand new in 98. under 63K miles on it, very low miles for the year. this is my summer car ONLY!!! Stored winters in my dads garage under Wolf car cover which ill include. has all your standard trans am options, leather seats, chrome factory 16in rims. this is a 6 speed manual trans. (i have stock intake, MAF, and shifter to put back to stock if youd like) i also have a full size spare 16in chrome factory rim with a slight ding on it (the full size spare), with a Z rated potenza tire which is whats on the car now.

here is a list of things i have done to it:

skip shift eliminator, SLP air intake lid( like WS6), flowmaster american thunder series 3in catback exhaust(real clean nice rumble), hypertech programmer(do not have programmer anymore, however it is still upgraded) Hurst short throw shifter from SLP like they put in the WS6 models, Granatelli MAF sensor, new clutch, flywheel slave cyl 3 yrs ago(less than 15k miles) within last yr have done- new ac delco wires and ngk plugs, drivers window motor/regulator replaced, water pump also replaced, new drilled/slotted front rotors with ceramic pads( much better on the chrome rims)...i also have a $500 Clifford alarm system that was installed by best buy in 02 when i worked there. it is the pager type key fob so if your within range your key fob will either beep or vibrate when alarm goes off, depending on your preference..much better than the stock alarm.

engine, interior, everything is beautiful. this is 11yrs old so there is normal wear and tear to be expected but not much few scratches here and there mostly on front headlights from rocks...few small dings barely noticeable on hood and small one on right rear quarter...very insignificant just want to try to be as honest as possible..super clean...i also have a great condition a/c compressor ill include that i bought but havent had money to install it because i was laid off my job from jan till beginning of june. the a/c doesnt work. it worked the first yr i had it and blew super cold. stored it that first winter and hasnt worked since 03.any other questions please feel free to ask!!

also car is for sale locally so i reserve the right to cancel this auction at anytime

cd player is not included with the car"

Is there anything I should look out for? Is there any reason to stay away from it? I can pull it for $7000 and he told me he would include the fiberglass trunk box as well as the amplifier. Thanks for your input in advance!

I am sure someone knows better then me but I think in my research I found there were 86 1998 Trans Am's this color. And I think 18 were WS6 or something along that line anyhoo.

Sounds like a good deal to me, purple was definitely the rarest color in '98. With the options that thing has, it has to be extremely rare. Take a look at these production numbers:

If you figure off the percentage of manual Trans Am's built that year then your looking at approx 20 6spd BPM Trans Am's for 1998.

            Definetely a good find.

If the car is in really good shape as his ad claims, then it's a good deal, esp. because it's low miles. However he's had a lot of stuff replaced in the last year or two (window motor, water pump, clutch.) If you're not mechanically inclined, I would take a buddy who is to look at it before your buy.

But it sounds really good and yes the purple is very rare on the '98s if that's the original color. They only built them for a few weeks at the beginning of the 98 model year, then cancelled the color, and never offered it again after that on Firebird.

                  Good luck!

I second the RPO codes, seems like a good deal. If the codes dont match up tho, dont be suprised if other things are fishy with the car as well.

Go. Check it out. Take her for a spin. Check the underside and if you really need to, take it by a grage for their once over. Then, if you feel good about it and you have the cash, let the dealin' begin!
