Check the plug wires, I had a random misfire & ran just how you've described. It was a burnt plug wire. With most headers, it will be #5 or #6.

I probably jumping to conclusions because it recently got new plugs/wires. I didnt see any plug wires touching the header or melted.
This morning to work it drove flawless, maybe the tune doesn't like eleven billon degree weather like yesterday? Still going to get codes pulled on my lunch break.06 MazdaSpeed 6 ( 14.8@93.48 ) RW 3630lbs

Well the car drove perfect today to work, and i drove about 30 minutes on my lunch break without any mis-fire. starting to think its a the tune is not compatible with 90+ degree ambient temps?
autozone couldnt pull the codes, their scanner read "error"
edit: tj response from baker:

It could be an issue realted to heat yes. Tune issue more then likely not, something is going ary when it gets that hot. It could very well be the Opti. Also check that no o2 sensor wires are hitting the headers, this is a common source of vehicles running bad when hot.

There is a black wire melted against a driver side header...06 MazdaSpeed 6 ( 14.8@93.48 ) RW 3630lbs

Ok, heres a picture of the black wire thats touching/melted on the driver side header. Im not sure what it is, but i doubt its o2. Its thick/not very flexible -- kinda rigid. I tried to ziptie it, but might have to do that from the bottom.

I can see the picture in edit mode, but not in the post. Hopefully others can see it.Last edited by buttons; June 26th, 2009, 04:10 PM.06 MazdaSpeed 6 ( 14.8@93.48 ) RW 3630lbs

Sorry, can't see it. Are you attaching the image using the paperclip?
http://www.mifbody.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=25222 is a how-to on attaching pictures.
Another idea is that if it is infact heat related, it could be the ignition coil module is getting heat soaked...- Brian Meissen

The car has been running great with cooler ambient temps. so maybe your exactly right about the ICM getting heat soaked.

Yeah I can't picture what that wire is - I took out my cruise control so I think you're right, Spencer. And holy cow, I didn't realize Mike and them had to dent the primary that much to clear the steering yoke...- Brian Meissen

That is the cruise control cable going to the throttle body. I would not think that would cause a miss, but higher idle if the heat was enxpanding and pulling cable. Just to be on the safe side you can disconnect that easily from the throttle body control arm. Just open rocker arm half way and slip it off and out of hole. Tie it up out of way so no interference. Then if mis fire idle problem re-occurs you know that this for sure is not the problem.sigpic

I was looking at the picture some more, and I would really suspect a problem with #3 plug wire connection its cocked and against temp sensor, may not be seated all the way on the plug, also don't like the routing of the #5, 7 wires they could easily be rubbing and shorting to frame the way they are.sigpic

Car still has been running great, ill double check the plug wires tightness. this is my first LT1, but the flowtechs i got for my LS1 had bent primarys like that right out of the box. had to remove the starter and steering knuckle to get them to fit
What a PITA. Personally, ill never do long tubes again.06 MazdaSpeed 6 ( 14.8@93.48 ) RW 3630lbs
