  • Lets play Whats that Sound?!?

Ok, so on my way home from up north this weekend(ran the car at mid michigan) my car started making this REALLY REALLY annoying noise. Its like a howeling noise. After looking into this for HOURS, we found out the hotter it gets the more it does this and the louder it is. It only does this when it is under a vaccuum, ie rev it and let off the gas or when crusing, and when it gets hot, even at an idle.

Best way to describe it is it sounds like rear end wine. Except it does it even when the cars not moving. I have a video at home ill post when I get home from work, but i thought id let this sink in and get yall brainstorming.

I checked the brake booster hose and hvac hose, both are connected, no apparent cracks or leaks, still have power brakes and hvac switches properly.

I dont have it on my tablet, its on my desktop, ill post it when I get home, it sounds kinda like if you blow across the top of the bottle and it makes that whoooooooo noise. Im thinking the intake is cracked in the back by the vacuum hookups.

          Could be a broken/cracked resonator.

My car sounds like it has a nice exhaust, inside, because I removed the intake resonator and it sounds very deep and mellow...and loud (Brian has heard it).

Waiting on youtube, should only be about 2 more mintues.

The intake gasket on these is those rubber o rings, its possible but I used brand new ones, so I doubt it.

Its coming from the back of the motor area, I even took the whole airbox assembly off to check, and it still makes the sound with out it.

Larry I used the pcv that was recommended for the truck motor, which turns out to be the same for pretty much all of the ls motors. I believe it is the first design with the rattle ball thing.

I think the truck should be just a restrictor not an actual valve.
pull it out and put your finger over it and see if it stops
check the egr block off too.

Perhaps the smog pump? Mine made a similar noise when the bearing wore out. That is if you didn't already throw it in the garbage.

                              No emissions on this *****.

However we did figure it out!

The hose that the auto parts store gave me to use for pcv appeared to work fine, I guess it did for the first month or so since the cars been back together. But when I pulled the pcv valve as larry suggested and put my finger over the end of it, the noise went away(again as larry firgured it would), I was pretty excited this is all that it was! But it wasnt the valve, when i put my finger over the end of the valve the whole strech of tubing collapsed. And the whooooooooooo noise I heard was air just bearly sqeaking through the collapsed tube. Replaced all the pcv lines with some goodyear emmisoins grade hose and problem solved!

Thanks larry for your help on this one, really had us scratching our heads over here!
