  • 1995 3.4 m5 fan help needed

So my girlfriends sister just got a 1995 3.4 m5 Camaro. Its one of those cars that seems to have a lot of demons, glad I didnt buy it.

    Problem 1.
Her dad says that the fan on the radiator doesn't come on. He checked all fuses and wiring that he could, but is there a relay for that? Any other ideas? Also, what temp should the fan come on?

My car's temp gauge doesn't work and I don't think I have ever heard my fan come on, but I am rarely just sitting with it running.

    Problem 2
Also, he wanted to know how to get the pcm to send out codes to a scanner. It has a SES light and he wants to know what it is, although I am almost positive its EGR like mine and everyone elses. Just turn the key to accesory...right?

    Problem 3.
On my car, the temp gauge doesnt work at all, oil pressure usually says 70-80 and alt gauge says 16-18. It looks like they are a quater too high. Any ideas on this? My spedo is off 3-9 mph, how does this happen? Isnt it electronicly controlled?

    HEEEELLLLPPP!!!

    Thanks

Problem 1. there is a relay that turns on the fan. Relay is located in fuse box by anti lock brake unit under the hood. The relay is controled by PCM which gets its temp signal from senser on engine block. Look in lid of fuse box for diagram for which relay. you can test the fan by pulling relay and jumpering the 2 relay contacts. go to shbox.com for diagram. I think the fan comes on around 160 or 170 degrees.
Problem 2. SES light is usually Oil level low, or couple of other things I am not sure on the 3.4 V6. it could all be related to problem 3
Problem 3. sounds like you have a ground problem. with all the gauges off. check to ground connect by battery on fender well. ( disconnect the ground on the battery first to clean the ground) Always disconnect grd on battery first then positve last. This prevents spikes and blowing electronics. When connecting always put pos. on battery 1st and ground on last.

Problem 1 & 2 are on my gf's sisters car, problem 3 is on my car. Low Oil and SES are separate lights.

A ground problem is very possible as my car's battery connections are bad. Also, there is an orange wire under my dash that hangs loose, no idea what it goes to. Any idea's?

      thanks

ses has a number of things that trigger it. I'll check books and get you a list.
Orange wire? where does it come from? can you trace it back? is it a splice or does it disapear into harness. If it is a splice could be left over from alarm or remote start that got removed. Older cars can be fun cause you never know what was done years ago.

Get a code reader, or go to auto zone and see if they will read the code. there are to many to list.

Usually SES lights on 3.4s is o2 sensors one/both bad. It would throw DTC 13 or 63 (open circuit), 14, 64 (lean) or 45,64 (rich)

For the fan it could be the ECT Sensor. It sends a signal to the PCM which completes the ground for the coolant fan relay, which kicks on the fan when Temp exceeds 230*F. It should throw DTC 14 or 15

Just turn to accessory to get the codes read. I have a Actron Cp9150 so Iread mine & other info while my car is running

Rolo is right about those codes but there are 86 codes. 13 to 99
