  • Fresh rebuilt engine...won't start

I have a 98 camaro 3.8L auto I just finshed installing a rebuilt engine. The car turns over but won't start. I have not tried it to many times because I did not want to mess anything up. I have spark but not sure about fuel. How to I check to see if I have fuel? Also how to I prime the oil pump. I rented a primer tool from autozone but it is for a car with a distrator. Everthing I find use a drill but how? Thanks in advance for your help.

It took me about 8 turn overs to get my rebuild started, And i primed it by turning the key all the way, and then all the way off, then all the way on for about 5 times.

turn the key to start or just acc on? Did you have new bearing and oil pump with your bearings? How is your car running?

are you hearing the fuel pump turning on? Loosen the schrader valve on the passenger side of the rail to see if there is fuel at the rail. Make sure to do it slowly though or fuel will be everywhere, lol.

Lemme know if you need any help this week after work. I'm just down the street in Goodrich. Hell, I've been in Davison like 10 times in the past week.

Sounds like a fuel issue for sure if you have spark.

I took off the little black cap on the passenager side of the fuel rail. There was a little valve like you would find when you let air out of a tire. I turn the key to the on position, then pressed the valve and nothing happened nor did any fuel came out. I then had someone else crank the car and I pressed the valve while I car was trying to start. Nothing happened nothing came out. Do this mean there is no fuel getting to the injectors? What do I do next? It do sound like the fuel pump is turning on and the fuse is good I don't know about the relay. How can I check the fuel pump?

Make sure that all connections are together. I know people say something about a case relearn, but I have no idea if that has anything to do with it. It does sound like the fuel pump went kaput though.

there is a plug going to the pump. Get wire diagram to determine which wires, because you also have gas gauge sending unit wires in that plug. have some one hit the key while you check the wires with a meter. As I recall there is a + and a - to the pump. and the plug has 5 pins. This will tell you if you have voltage to the pump then the pump may have went kaput.

Could it be a clogged fuel filter. I brought this car with blown engine and it sat for about a year.

Yes, do the easiest first. KISS principle would work. It's nothing to change out the filter and with a new rebuild, it should be done anyway.

change filter since it hasn't been yet, should be changed anyways after the new engine.

Then check for power at the wiring harness by the tank like someone mentioned to see if you are getting power. Also check fuel pump fuse to see if it is good. Located on driver's side fuse panel when you open the door
