Car shakes violently when brakes applied

This just started recently.

I was on the highway heading to saginaw to visit my parents. I had to slow down a few times and when I hit the brakes the entire car started to shake like it was on crack! It was kind of hard to keep control of the car when going at least 70 when pushing the pedal.

Got onto the main street and kept doing it but not as bad.


Aug 2007 . I replaced the front rotors,calipers,pads. I havnt serviced the drum brakes yet.

But I rather have some insight before I look further into myself.


Any ideas? I would like to get this figured out ASAP!

how many miles are on the brakes? sounds like warped rotors. But it could be the rears too. go down the road and slowly apply the parking brake. if it shakes then you know its atleast the rears at fault

The front brakes.. the miles would be about 10k (I meant to say front brakes were changed in 2007 not last year)

Yeah, sounds like warped rotors to me but do like Alex said and find out.

i would agree, when you hit the brakes and the car shakes and the steering probly yanks hard, that would be the problem

kk I tried it today and no shaking what so ever when I pulled the ebrake.. Havnt did it in a while but I could of swore it stopped the car sooner years ago haha

I also agree with warped rotors.

Happens a lot when the temps get a bit warmer like they have been the past few days. You make a few stops and get the rotors nice and hot then hit a little puddle of cold water which in turn rapidly cools your rotors and warps them.

If this is a daily driver I would expect a piston to be hung up, because of salt piston corodes seizes up, then you are flexing rotor to stop. I would pop off the pads have someone slowly push the brake pedal and see if the piston moves. do one side at a time. If its frozen you can pump it out. I have cleaned then with 400 grit wet dry paper and reused them. LOL I know thats not by the book but a cheap fix till spring then put on new caliper. If this is the case pack the boot of the caliper piston with High temp grease. It will keep the salt from doing it again. Old trick I learned on english sports cars.
