    Y84 first came into play for "Bandit" cars in 1978 built out of Van Nuys, CA...Norwood cars were designated as Y82.

    Starting 1979, Y84s were all S/E "Bandit" cars, and remained that way through 81.

    After 1981, the Y84 became the "code du jour" for Trans Ams, but it was intended to represent the Recaro seat option through 85.

    GM frequently re-used RPOs through the years, and the Y84 eventually ceased to have any significant meaning even though it was still used occasionally...but I'm not sure when it changed or what it was intended to represent after 85.
    Hey Jeff
    The `78 Y84 Cars are they the Black ones and Y88 is the Gold ones.
    IIRC Gold was the original SE color for `78 and was replaced by Black after the Van Nuys Plant had problems with the paint.

        Sort of...the Y88 gold-and-black "S/Es" were the first intentional flip-flop paint scheme to collaborate with the Y84 black-and-gold "Bandit" S/Es.

        The Van Nuys cars were plagued by environmental concerns (i.e. banned paint mixes) over the originally spec'd gold paint...alledgedly too much lead in the paint...the original VN gold cars tend to have more of a "greenish" tint as opposed to the Norwood cars due to the the different paint mixes.

        Try getting that duplicated on a resto...lol...

            Ok, I did a little digging on this and here's my input......

            Y82= Trans Am option

            Y83= Trans Am GT option....for fourth gen birds this would only be on 93'-94's as the GT designation was dropped in 95'.

            Y84= Trans Am convertible

            But telling a Formula from a TA is fairly simple based on appearance...unless of course someone has made changes to the car to make it appear as a TA.
