I was thinking of buying a 96 firebird formula and was wondering what some of the common problems are. I drove the car today and the shifter seems kinda shakey. The car is a 3.8l v6 with a 5 speed manual trans and 138,000km.

Well, your first issue -- did the guy claim it's a Formula? The Formulas are v8 vehicles dressed as v6s. If it's a true Formula for that year, it should have an LT1 in it. If it has a 3.8L v6 in it, then it's either a regular Firebird or the v6 has been swapped into it which should raise some questions. Not sure what the issues were on the 3.8ls... I know my 3.4L had an oil leak at the rear of the driver's valve cover.- Brian Meissen

Stock tranny mounts on V6 cars are garbage. They're oil-filled and extremely flexible, though good at dampening vibrations. I swapped mine out initially for a solid rubber V8 mount (I think $15 at Auto Zone), but I broke that one in half doing burnouts after 3 days. Now I have a Energy poly mount and I absolutely love it. That plus the Hurst shifter is an absolute night and day difference from stock. Yeah it vibrates a bit and makes some noise, but the shifter hardly moves at all and just feels solid.Comment

ive got a 99 camaro 5 speed for sale if you are in the market.
My shifter moves around quite a bit too for reasons already stated. Ive got an LS1 mount waiting to be swapped in.-Joel
